Replaced the oil cooler seals and it is still leaking oil. Start up pressure is 80lbs. Would that cause the oil to leak at the seals? Anyone ever had an oil cooler leak? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

They shouldn’t leak, even at that pressure. When we test a 911 cooler, we pump them up to 60+ to make sure they aren’t leaking.

New or used oil cooler? Jake Raby just had a rant about the poor quality of the new oil coolers being sold that he posted two (2) days ago on his Type 4 performance engine Facebook page called "Raby's Aircooled Technology". Raby stated that he only uses old German made oil coolers that he has thoroughly cleaned using his ultra sonic cleaner and his "special sauce" proprietary cleaning fluid. Raby said his cleaning process takes several days of cleaning and degreasing and frequent changes of the special cleaning fluid he has developed for use in his ultra sonic cleaning machine. And before you ask, he does not sell his refurbished oil coolers unless you buy a complete engine from him.

Used to run a type 4 race motor with a big oil pump and 100 psi cold starts
Never had problems with cooler seals (fresh). Blew safety valves on the Accusump at 120psi on a cold race morning below freezing in Topeka |

Thanks for the replies, I'll have to remove the oil cooler and have it pressure checked. It's an original oil cooler.

Thanks for the replies, I'll have to remove the oil cooler and have it pressure checked. It's an original oil cooler. I'll toss this out there because it happened to me. Did an oil /filter change and valve adjustment then took it for a drive. I noticed smoke so I went back home. I crawled under and it looked like it was the cooler. I was ready to drop the engine but then thought about the filter I just replaced, so I checked it. The POS Fram filter did not tighten all the way down and blew oil all over. It was hitting something solid and would not seat. |
