I was 18 and wanted a new Honda 750... Which my parents were against.
They told me to go buy a "nice car"..
My dad knew one of the owners of "Park Hagerty Porsche" in Lawrence Mass.
He had bought Volkswagens from them for years.

There was a 914-6 there that was just traded back for a new 911..

Yeah, my dad co-signed the loan for me...

Was a lifetime ago

Awesome story. When I was 17, I had a really good job in the supermarkets and I was very good with saving money. I wanted a new ‘83 GTI.

Had to get a cosigner and my dad was the boss in the family, otherwise I would’ve went to mom. He wouldn’t sign for a ““ foreign car.. well then I said I wanted a Mustang GT. He wouldn’t let me get a V8. I ended up settling for a car that looked neat— a 1983 escort GT. Probably had 60 hp.

Turned out to be a lemon—used to sit at stoplights and it would just ghost rev up to 4000 RPM and then shutter down to about 200 RPM and do this a few times then take a long nap. Four flatbed rides home the first year.

Of course I didn’t know what the lemon law was and neither did my parents. Sold it after about three years.

The next car, my dad bought for himself was a 1984 Honda Civic. A couple years ago I was reading in the papers that the GTI back then was the first Volkswagen to be made in America. Even if I knew that there was no way I could’ve convinced my dad—we did not have conversations. He believed in that old adage—kids should be seen and not heard.

Who knows maybe he saved my life, he probably did. I would’ve been taking some fast corners in the GTI, and some full on speed bursts in that Mustang GT.

Nice! Awesome car.

I did buy a 1976 Honda 750 in 1977. Sweet bike with so smooth power. Sold it for college funds a few years later. Huge mistake. Never got another bike. My 914 was purchased in 2003.

The last part of the 914 story was I had a 4 year loan on it and somehow, my dad co-signing the loan got his name on the Life Insurance Policy that was part of the loan.
He passed away 2 years later at 50 years old and the 914 got paid off.
It was his final gift to me and that is why I could never sell the car. Even though it hasn't been registered since the late 80's.

I think the time is right for you to get it back on the road. You’re my age and time isn’t on our side.
