I needed a new speedometer cable. Aside from pulling up some carpet and exposing the tunnel run, I thought it would be a simple job. Maybe an hour. When I got into it I found that the prior owner had wrapped the old speedo cable into the harness and run it back past the shifter with friction tape wound all the way up under the dash. Hours later, I'd removed the old wrapping and run the new cable into the proper spot down the tunnel. Then when it was all ready to connect I learned that the new cable I installed was sent with a defective end near the transmission link. As in not at all. It was loose in the shipping bag. Argh. That was my mistake for assuming the new part was good.

I'm sure there are worse stories of prior owner knuckle-head moves, but this one cost me hours of time, plenty of filth, and some real knuckle skin.

When I bought my 914, the PO had moved the battery up front, due the hell hole rot and no battery tray. He ran the battery cable in the long and up beside the gas tank. He had the battery cable zip tied to the gas line!! And on top of that, the car reaked of fuel because the fuel pump was leaking and loose below the tank. It was a literal Time Bomb!!

I feel your pain for sure. Have many PO stories, most of them electrical. Why do so many people love to hack into harnesses?

The 914 I have now had the left headlight eyebrow blob welded into place. Probably not the PO so much the body shop that fixed a fender-bender. Still, took many hours to make right.

Did you get another speedo cable? Supplier swap out the defective part?

That's annoying.

My best PO story was cutting the engine lid rain tray to clearance for a larger battery ... which conveniently funneled all the water from the entire tray directly onto the battery! Oh the hell hole in that car when I got it ...
