my 73 was a 1.7 base model and came from the factory with a cover...fyi

good info to have.
i did have a very early 73 1.7 on file. base model. USA deliv. unrestored and in good condition. did not have them. but they could easily have been removed.

the european sales brochures are interesting. for 73 and 74 you can see in the photogarphs the base models had no vent covers. thats for the home market and european cars however.

the porsche museum holds dr. marcharts base 1974 1.8. its unrestored (according to the museum director) and it is in excellent original condition. it has no vent covers.

my own car is a 74 USA delivered 1.8, base model. has the vent covers. its original and unrestored. every other good original 1.8 base i have seen or have on file has the covers and filters.

i revise my guess. seems all the USA cars very likely had these vent covers after 1973 at least.

the euro and ROW cars did not seem to have them on the base cars after 73.

don't have info to know much about 72.

and everything i have seen thats trustworthy indicates no vent covers on any cars for 70 and 71 as per @mepstein .

We had a big discussion about this maybe 10 years ago and a couple original owners chimed in. But it couldn’t be easier to pop in or out depending on your mood.

this is what the PET catalogue says.

USA parts catalogue.

ROW parts catalogue

its slightly ambiguous when you look closely.

for the 914/6 it lists the part explicity as typ 914/6.
which could mean all 914/6. or if you look across it says 72 as the year.
which could mean its a typ 914/6 part for 72. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

and further to right in last colunn its pretty clear for both USA and ROW.
its 72 on for all cars.
however there is some pretty strong evidence that certain base cars in certain markets (but not the USA) did not get them on base cars.

would not be the first time that the PET has errors or is unclear or does not strictly take into account the detail of how cars were speced up for specific markets.

i still think the 914/6 is a little ambiguous in terms of these vents.
72 /6 for sure.
and definitely at launch the 6 did not appear to have them.

yeah thats right. very easy to put them in. or take them out if repainting or restoring and lose them. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) and now its half a century later and who bloody knows. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
and really........who bloody cares. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

i only noticed the oddity when i got some documentation on the 74 1.8 in the museum from the director who helped us out with some L jet research stuff and sent some photos of the silver dr. marchart euro 1.8. it was quite interesting because it showed up the differences which were quite marked between the euro 1.8s and the UISA 1.8s.
he assured me the car was very very very original. its quite low mileage too.
20,000 km. which is biugger all in miles. he didn't clock it either. was a company car he drove to work. after he was finished with it - he donated it to the museum. its one of their nicest cars but no one takes any notice of it because its a 1.8 914. very occasionally they put it on display. There’s currently a 74 1.8 for sale on this site that I think is an overlooked gem.
