Also It’s time for new bushings.
The smart guy gets the ceramic spherical bushing for the firewall. But ALL of them should be replaced. You will be amazed what a transformation it is. Zach |

That's where the hose clamp becomes the right choice. Tighten the cone screw down and put a hose clamp around that bad boy. |

I had this same problem last week on my '73. I pulled back the firewall boot and chunks of the old bushings fell out. I ordered the complete kit from pelican parts. (Great quality, by the way). You will need to get the rear end of the car off the ground to do it. Install is straightforward. I ended up unbolting the stick shift assembly (3 bolts) and slid the front linkage rod forward. I also tried boiling the firewall bushing to get it to go in. After many unsuccessful attempts, I just cut through one side of the bushing with a razor blaze and pushed it in little by little, with the cut end at 12 o'clock. Worked for me. As of Thursday, the car is all put back together and shifts beautifully.
