Car off, hazard switch on, lights flash and arrows are fully lit, both, on the dash. Key on, hazards on, lights flash, dash arrows on the tach go out. If I'm reading this correctly, it does not make sense. Look at the diagram. When the hazard switch is pulled, power goes from pin 30 to pin 49 to power the flasher relay. At this point the hazard lights are independent of the ignition switch. Try this test: - Ignition off - Pull hazard switch (4 outside lights should flash + both arrows) - Turn ignition switch to ON (don't have to start the car; turn ON only for a couple of seconds) The 4 outside lights should flash + both arrows - Turn ignition switch OFF. |

When I turn the ignition on in that scenario, the arrows on the dash dim, still flash, but dim. The lights at the 4 corners all work through the whole test. |

More progress, more confusion
I found a salvage turn signal switch I had, never tested, didn't know if it worked. I decided to just plug it in, not install it. Blinkers work L&R, F&R, fuse does not blow. Progress... Did more testing Different turn signal switch plugged in, hazards work, lights good, fuse good, light switch off, key off, both dash arrows light brightly. Key on hazard sw pulled, lights flash f & r, dash arrows dim pkng sw on, relay clicks, front, no lights flash, rear lights ok With the turn signals flashing, if I pull the light sw to either position the front light go from flashing to on solid, I think. Could just be the running lights, I would have to unplug those to verify. The stop flashing issue is confusing. The arrows on the dash dimming is confusing. |

That you have interaction with the running lights seems to indicate there may be an issue with the ground in the front light housing. That is the only place the running light and turnsignal share a ground. In the rear, the turnsignal bulb is separate from the running light which is with the brake light.
When you do key on and dash arrows dim, there is a remote possibility that key on/engine off may cause the battery voltage to dip giving the arrows less voltage. Try starting the car and see if the arrows remain dim. BTW, do you have LEDs for turnsignals or bulbs? |

The bulbs in the main light fixtures are all LED right now, std in the dash lights.
I have a battery tender on the car while doing all of this testing, battery should be OK. This AM I am going back to square one. I made the mistake of doing multiple upgrades during the repair and it has caused issues and confusion, for me anyway. I am going to revert back to all incandescent bulbs and the original flash relay and retest to get a new baseline. Fix one problem and move on. I should have done that a long time ago. |

All normal bulbs back in place, original flasher relay installed, original turn signal switch hooked up. Turn signals do not work, fuse does not blow.
Test turn signal switch hooked up Key off Pull the hazard sw, lights flash, arrows are bright on the dash, fuse good. Turn the pkng lights on, lights flash, arrows bright on the dash, fuse good. Key on Hazards on, lights flash, arrows on dash are bright, fuse good. Pkng lights on, lights flash, arrows bright, fuse good. Head lights on, same results. So I had multiple errors at the same time. Looks like I have solved the blowing fuse using the left turn signal issue. I will get the salvage TS switch installed and see if it holds. The LED upgrade has seemed to cause some errors that compounded the problem I was having. |

It will be interesting to see what's up with this short. I've got Spokes taillights & relay. I also have LED headlamps and LED bulbs throughout sans the GEN lamp. But nary a clue as too what going on with your issue. Following with interest. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)

Hopefully I can get some probes on the turn signal switch and see what happened.

Installed the new switch and it is working, no blown fuses. Back to square one finally. This old switch is a lot stiffer than the broken one. I may still look for a different one when things settle down. Turn cancel needs some work.
I have not dug into the broken one to see why it doesn't work yet. |

Well the test turn signal switch functioned electrically, but did not cancel. So I ordered one from stod dud. Don't do it. I was desperate so I over payed due to shipping etc. When I got it, the box had the label cut off. It was probably a cheap Asian knock off and they did not want to advertise that fact. Installing it was a pain. The sleeves did not go in very well, I had to tweak things to get it to line up. It messed up the wiring for my electric washer switch, now I will have to do that some time in the future. After all that, it did not cancel either. I give up. I will leave it and just look like an old Florida driver with my turn signal on while I drive.
Still looking for a good new, NOS, alternative for the turn signal switch for a 74. I'm tired of re-doing things so many times and moving on for now. |

are you saying that the little nylon nub, under the plate doesn't hit the curved metal wire to cancel?
can you bend the wire? |

The switch is just stiff and won't return. The switch is brand new but I suspect it is not top quality. The one I had in there worked just find, except for the short issue.
Does the cancel tab rest in the 3 o'clock position? |

OK so just to be clear, I have a momo hub and steering wheel with the horn ring and turn signal cancel tab mounted on it. What position does the turn signal cancel tab on the hub go when the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position?

Turns out the cheap, not cheap turn signal switch I bought is broken. Within 2 miles of driving. The return tab on the switch is broken. They cut the name off the box so I can't even tell what not to buy again.
Very frustrating. I thought I had crossed this off my list! |

Found another turn signal switch and ordered it. They claim to be OEM from Europe. Waiting for it to show up. Hopefully this one will work completely and last for more than 2 miles of driving.
