For a 73 2.0, does someone know what the correct sticker is for the right front wheel arch? This one says it is for a 1.7 L.

Also, are there any decals in the engine compartment for a 73 2.0?

Many thanks

Can anyone with a factory 73 2.0 please confirm that the middle decal shown, with 98 ROZ is the correct one for a 73 2.0?

no it is not for a 73 2.0
you want the 91 RON sticker if the car is a 73 USA 2.0

here is how they go from info i have collected along the way doing L jet research.
if you look closely jeff b has question marks on the grey 95 and 98 RON stickers - for a reason i'm guessing which would be that he had not seen them on a car and was unsure of their origin and spec - they are rest of world stickers but not USA stickers.
USA was progressively shifting to unleaded fuel in the years 73/74 and the cars had to be able to run on the unleaded which at that time was quite a low octane. 91 RON and that was it, unlike today when we have higher octane formulations of unleaded.

Attached Image

the way it went in 73 was -
USA (49 states) 1.7 was allowed to run on leaded high octane (98 RON sticker at top).
CALIF 1,7 had to be able to run on 91 RON (mandatory) - probably had grey 91 RON but i have never seen an original example.
USA + CALIF 2.0 ran on 91 RON. this was mandatory for CALIF but not yet required in 49 states. Porsche did it anyway for 49 states presumably because the 2.O was freshly developed that year and they knew it had to run on 91 USA wide the next year in 74.
so all the 2.0s had the grey 91 RON sticker.

in 74 all states of USA required the car to be able to run on 91.

in 75 all CALIF cars had the restrictor that meant it could only run on 91 (Cats were fitted). rest of USA remained had to be able to run on 91 and did not have the restrictor i believe.

this might also assist.
a very good condition 73 2.0 documented on BAT.
had a repaint, but only externally.
all the inners were taped off and remain original (see the image record of repaint).

has the grey RON 91 sticker. its a pretty early 73 2.0 as well dating from 06/73 Vin sticker and Vin number.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1973-porsche-914-71

----------

to round things out on the octane decal front, i did have an example of a CALIF 73 1.7
and its got the 91RON sticker as i surmised, different from the 98 RON sticker on the USA 73 1.7s
this is from a very original car that was sold a couple of years ago and was #126 down the line. probably second day of production.

I have an original 1976 49 state car (no catalyst ) . I believe the car to be a survivor car.

For your records hers is a photo of my sticker . The car was originally sold in Michigan .

nice you have a survivor 76 @Ron914 .
cool thanks for the sticker shot.

going slightly off topic but strictly on topic for your car, we been looking at windscreen washer bottles (caused by @TonyA getting punished by a know it all but no narthing show judge). and i've kind of ventured outside 74 L jets on this one.
but what kind of washer bottle have you got in your 76. i'm referring to the little collar at the top of the bottle which the black cap screws into. is it a tinted blue collar or is it a white collar same plastic as the bottle itself? and what month of production is your car?

@wonkipop
@Jamie

Really nice info Michael, will update the webpage.

A Q though, the 73 1.7L (german language) was given by Jamie Donaldson...a very original 73 1.7L. Jamie can you confirm this decal is on your car? And perhaps its VIN?

I wonder if there was a labelling change somewhere along the line?

here is what i have on 1.7 in detail for your question.
( i don't really have a great many examples on file like i do for L jets).

73 1.7 EA engine (49 states). paint stamp 610. 8.2:1 high compression - requires high octane. 80 hp.

1. 03/74 production date. (presumed to be 49 states - octane label matches other confirmed EAs).

Attached Image
Attached Image

2. 07/73 production date. (right at end of production run of 73, confirmed 49 state delivery - so EA engine. Oklahoma Delivery car.

Attached Image
Attached Image
Attached Image

3. 07/73 production date. confirmed 49 state delivery - Florida. EA engine.
apologies for image of octane label. all there was. but you can see its not a plain grey 91 octane label. its the red letter one with the symbol.

Attached Image

4. 11/72 production date. confirmed 49 state delivery. engine stamp # 610 = EA engine.

5. 07/73 production date. scant documentation on this. presumed to be an EA.

73 1.7 EB engine (california). 613 paint stamp. low compression 7.3:1 can run on lower octane fuel as unleaded was when first introduced. 73 hp.

1. my one and only example. 07/72 production date. extremely early 73 MY. 128 down the line. 613 engine stamp. confirmed Caiif delivery.
this car was the subject of a topic here - owner was a member here. he posted detailed information as he cleaned up this car. true survivor car - fully intact. the documentation of his recommission and clean up was used for a BAT sale.

from this limited amount of material i have on 73 1.7s i draw a limited conclusion.

the EA hight compression engine equipped cars for 73 kept using the earlier fuel 98 octane sticker (that i believe is also on the 72 and earlier cars?).

the newly introduced EB version of the 1.7 engine with low compression for california
required the new 91 octane rating sticker - the same sticker used on the 73 2.0s.

from 73 on all the USA cars had the 91 octane sticker with the exception of the 49 state 1.7 in 1973.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

-------
one of the more interesting little bits of info i tripped over along the way was that the european (ROW) 1.8s of 74 and 75 had a compression ration of 8.6:1 - exactly the same as the 914/6. and higher than the original D jet WO/EA engines.
naturally required 98 RON as a minimum. those particular twin carb AN engines were sweet little engines. if i ever was to think of having another 914 (and i won't) and money was no object i would scour europe for one of those cars.

Jamies car is VIN 4732914926, german text, red letter label. Original owner, inherited from father.

All the 1973 1.7L example labels are german text, red letter labels, except the one white car VIN 00128, with black text. 00128 has been repainted. If possible, would be nice to confirm that it is a replacement label, which I suspect.

It would seem that all 73 1.7L 914s are german text, red letter labels.

no, the white car is an EB engine jeff.
its the weak californian 1.7.
73 only. california only.
and its a confirmed EB engine and confirmed californian car.
i can send you a link to the BAT sale and documentation and also attempt to find the topic thread here with all the documentation.
an extremely original car.
i doubt in the extreme its a restickered car. it was not restored. it was only thoroughly deep cleaned by the member here and then offered for sale.
the kind of car i like to see. unmeddled with.

the EA engine in the 49 state cars could not run on 91 octane. hence the 98 RON german text sticker.
but the EB engine could run on 91 octane (it would of course run on higher octanes like 98, but being lower compression was able to run on 91 - hence the min 91 sticker.
the introduction of unleaded fuel was a phased operation in the USA beginning in 1973.
california first. the rest of USA was to be the next year 1974.
californian cars were required to be able to run on 91 octane. by regulation.
the next year in 1974 the rest of the USA phased in unleaded and all cars were required to be able to run on 91 unleaded gasoline.

if anything the 73 2.0 L (49 states) is the anomaly. it could run on 91 unleaded but was not yet required to by regulation until 1974. the did it anyway. just made it USA wide in 1973.

it is not until 1975 that the cars had to be able to run ONLY on unleaded.
and that was applicable in california only due to the fitment of catalysers.
the regulations mandated a restrictor on the filling cap so that only an unleaded fuel filler nozzle would fit.
not only was unleaded phased, the entirety of the emissions introductions was phased during the 1970s. california would always be the first phase a year in front of the rest of the USA.

so that white 73 is the real deal.

i'm sure with enough searching i could turn up a second one.
its just that i am not particular motivated to research 73 1.7s.
the sole reason that the californian 1.7 is so low on power is not due to any emissions device per se, its that the pistons were dished and the compression lowered and hence the power drop. all done purely to allow it to run on 91 Ron.

the next year they enlarged the engine to 1.8 as the entire US market required the same compression drop to run on 91. the displacement increase got some of the power loss back. not all of it. but some of it.

Seems logical. But that white car above, the paint around it, is severely chipped as if it was repainted and chipped out because they forgot to mask it off.

Is this markup accurate?

here you go @JeffBowlsby

i knew the octane ratings were all there and all in one place.
just had to remember.
haynes manual.

Attached Image

same info can be found but scattered and particular to each model market and year in the owners manual for each car.

eg. UK market owners manual.
lists the octane rating for the ROW 74 cars.
higher octane higher compression engines than USA.

Attached Image

i don't have a 73 USA owners manual. never come across one even on line to file.
but i will bet it lists those octane ratings for cars in there and distinguishes the calif 1.7 from the USA 1.7.

i'm guessing what has you wondering is why would the calif 1.7 have the modernised smaller sticker same as the 73 2.0s but the 49 state 1.7 has the earlier style sticker.
(note too, even the later ones grey ones are in german too. just not as many german words. octane is spelt okton (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ). i would say its because they did new stickers for the new engines that were designed to run on unleaded. being the USA wide 2.0 and the calif 1.7 and just kept the old stickers on the higher compression 49 state 1.7s which were more or less unchanged from the 1972 EA engines. that would be my guess.

i'd also guess that the 2.0 was beefy enough even in unleaded form which porsche would have envisaged from the get go with that later 2.0 engine that VW/Porsche could go USA wide with it from the start. why bother with a one year only higher compression 2.0 just keep it simple. but the 1.7 was a different story. the EA really was the last gasp of the old high compression leaded fuel and in californian low compression form it was truly gutless. so they just wrung what they could out of the EA where it could still be sold for one more year. i also suspect that the Ljets were supposed to be for 73 but got held up in development. the white engine painted stamp numbers seem to hint at that. the 74 L jets have lower sequence numbers there and the EA and EB of 73 numbers are higher, as if added as an afterthought or later addition. suggesting to me that 73 was a fill in year they cobbled together while they waited to get the L jet system fully sorted and to market.

i'll have a snoop around BAT when i get some time and see if i can turn up another trustworthy calif delivered 1.7. truth is they don't seem to come up often with all stickers etc surviving or documented and in a trustworthy enough original state.

mark up is accurate.

we could continue to entertain uncertainty around 73 calif 1.7 and see if i can turn up another supporting example.

ya not gunna believe this jeff.
i sat down to have a quick look at BAT while i was waiting for my chicken soup to warm up. a quick scroll i figured. hit the first 73 that came up on BAT as i rolled down the page. a rusty (let me correct that a very very rusty) 73. but beneath the shirt of solid dirt (steel returning to mineral) beat a heart still a little gold.

here it is.

sure its had a repaint externally. where the paint could stick to stuff that wasn't dirt revert. but the inners are original.

links to the whole (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif) show.

took all of 10 minutes.
thats enough for now.
chicken soup to eat.

i will resume a more forensic search when i have some real time.
this one was too easy. still laughing it was the first one i hit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
