It might sound like a bit of a cop out at first but what if everyone chooses their own challenge and works to complete it. The idea of everyone “winning” is a good one when it comes to getting more 914’s back on the road. The more people participating, the more everyone can help the challengers move towards their goals.

It’s near impossible to do any kind or big restoration in a year or less.

I think that the real win for anyone participating is that it helps make progress and make better connections with the community. Don't get me wrong, I don't think any of us grew up getting participation trophies (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) and expecting something unearned, but I think everyone should get the support of each other to get (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif) Done.
To that end, I think that there can be lots of categories as long as we have a few people in each one to "Compete" with if you are motivated that way.
Chris said he was "not eligible" to participate last time (because he is a pro?) I don't think that should matter but it may make it harder for you to win Most Improved.

I put a note in the newsletter today for 9/14 weekend to invite more people to help with rule ideas, but I think we have a pretty good start on them so far.

Last time, we had to post at least once a month with our progress. That was part of the fun for everyone else watching. That was before everyone was on social media (which is easier to post to), but we want people coming and participating in the 914World community. It is easier for people to go back through the build thread and see your starting condition of the car, what your goal is by 9/14/27, and we can rig up something to make voting easy. I believe the way that it works for Frances with the Sema build is that when it gets down to the final 3, they have to be the ones to determine who won. Don't know if that could work here, but who isn't going to vote for her (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif)

I am in too...my 914 has been off the road for several years...bitten by the allure of a six conversion...any additional motivation would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be interested too but I already got a jump start on my 73 project. Going to convert it to a 6. It's all stripped down and needs chassis repairs. Once the work is done, strip to bare metal, epoxy, then paint. All of the work is to be completed in house.

Guess I would need to see the rules then decide.

Actually it was the lack of rust & paint. With the HP increase and likely needing fatter rear tires I put that at the bottom of the list, if ever. My car could use a full strip, rustproofing, and a full paint job. That's a lot of down time I have no interest in right now.

Thoughts:
1. Goal is getting the car driving, and doing stuff with it.
2. I'm thinking every month the top 5, mostly based on time committed, get equal value gift certificates. Don't want peeps to game the system. Being every month should split up the winners as weather and other life events happen. Also rewards 'smaller' projects vs full year restorations.
3. Time doesn't have to be direct productivity, but can include learning to weld or other new skill - that would make current skill set(s) less of an advantage.
4. Instead of a 'grand' prize, we do WCR style with multiple awards.

Awards ideas:
1. most miles (trailering at 50% value)
2. most new skills acquired
3. most skills needed
4. most build hours
4. most seat time
6. most events attended (local car shows count)
7. most "glow up" -> ugly to pretty
8. People's choice
9. most want to own
10. most want to 'test drive'
11. best stock
12. best modded
13. most interesting thread
14. most difficult build

I think you are going to need a handful of 'judges' that read all the threads and assign scores every month. I don't think the rest of us are going to have time to keep up with dozens of build threads til the final voting.

Annual awards >$100 plus trophy/plaque/badge
tshirts for everyone that puts in a decent number of hours.

I love the idea of the skills. I have been thinking about that a lot lately. As an old scoutmaster and Frances dad being a current scout leader, we were talking about all of the skills that she learned on her build and how much it was like her Eagle Scout Project in so many ways. So for her headliners I am going to work on some embroidered patches and have that be like her merit badge sash. Uhmmm, I didn't start my resto yesterday, more like 10 years ago. But this is my first 914 rodeo. Right after I finished all my metal work (lots and lots), a forum member sold my son a rusty 914 and I got to do all the metal work again...not fair. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I'm pretty sure that if I had a chance to read the rules...I probably have broken them all. But mine is a real six and I wanted it to remain a real six. I am a couple weeks away from starting mine, so making 9/14/27 is looking very do-able.
But one could argue that I had a bit of a head start. And to be truthful...once this six is on the road, the idea of me beginning again with another rusty chassis...is, well (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

So maybe I am halfway in?

I’m in. I need motivation to complete my 6. It’s painted and I have pulled the harness back in. There’s much to do including weather stripping, interior, completing the suspension, and the engine. I’ve never driven it and want to before I pass.

Then how do we know if it runs? This past few years I have been trying to achieve the maybe possible of getting all four of my toy cars running and looking decent all at the same time. Plus I am trying to learn to paint. It has been fun, but surprisingly difficult.

Just throwing out thoughts...

Original rules:
What is the criteria to participate?
a. Must include removal and installation, or installation of the engine.
b. Must include significant rust/accident repair, and/or paint and bodywork.
c. Must include significant interior work.

We had 35 participants, which was good, but how many actually finished their goals in the year.
Maybe lessen the scope to 'get it driving and doing things'.

The most valuable thing we have is time, so maybe award points for time put into the car?

Project Revitalization Challenge 2027+

Categories:
1. Stock
2. Upgrades/Modded
3. Bespoke (involves design & fabrication)

Rewards every month or 2 for the top 5, in gift certificates. Weather plus the usual life events, should limit repeat winners. Annual awards to the most improved, new skill sets, enthusiasm, etc. Open enrollment.

We think that there should also be mentor awards as part of the challenge. Here’s how they could work:
1.  Nominate. In progress posts, builders name who helped and how, whether it was a loaned tool, a part in the mail, or a phone call that saved a weekend.
2.  Vote. At the finish line, the community votes on the shortlist.
3.  Four awards. Mentor of the Year; Long-Distance Wrench, for the best remote help; First Responder, for the fastest useful answers; and Skill Sharer, for the best teacher of a new skill, like welding, wiring, or rust repair.
4.  Recognition. A trophy or plaque for the winners, plus a patch for everyone who gets nominated.
That way, even if you finished your car years ago, there’s still a way to take part. Your knowledge and encouragement could be exactly what another builder needs to keep going.
