I've been inside for cleaning, re-lubing and painting the needle. It is a little crazy in there, as suggested I would look at sending it to someone with proper tools and smaller hands. it's actually super easy to fix the odometer. If you like that kind of thing. There are instructions on pelican I think. Probably stickied in here too. I have done it a couple of times. You need to get the gear to hold the shaft again. Stupid pot metal gear.

This is what you will see when you open it up. Worm gear at bottom right is driven by speedo cable. That turns the brass gear on the odometer shaft. The worm threads on the other end turn another brass gear on the dial shaft. Just have to get in there and figure out what isn't turning properly. Thank you! Just what I was looking for… gotta give it a try. Dennis (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |

There are two possibilities for a failed odometer, when the speedometer keeps working.
1) First is a worn out or loosened gear in the odometer section of the gauge. There are various videos around on the Pelican Parts website and other sites about how to fix a loose gear in the odometer section of the gauge. Obviously, a gear with worn out teeth would have to be replaced. 2). The Second cause of a failed odometer is that the steel shaft which supports the row of odometer gears has worn the pot metal support arm in the gauge oval, and the odometer gears no longer contact and mesh with the drive gear because of the ovaled out support arm. I have not learned of anyone who can fix this type of problem, but I have encountered it on several used speedometer gauges that I gave purchased over the years. This type of wear seems to cause the odometer to stop working aroung 70 to 80 thousand miles. |
