Were all the dings and scrapes on the passenger side? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Good on him. Where we get in trouble is overestimating our ability to do things and make sound decisions as we move through life. Reflexes get slower, eyesight degenerates, night time vision becomes problematic, muscles weaken, and sometimes we make poor decisions because we want to don't want to face our contracting world and changes in the things that we believe define our freedom and agency. Driving is really one of those things that depends on our physical and mental soundness. You can have those abilities in your later years, but at 92 that is likely the exception rather than the rule. It's nice to see someone has gotten there. My mother drove until a stroke put an end to that in her 81st year of life. In her last few years of driving I noticed a LOT of dings, small dents and scrapes on her relatively new car. When I asked her about it she told me "a lot of people keep hitting me in parking lots." I think she really believed that. After she had her stroke we couldn't get rid of her car as she held on tightly to her hope to one day drive again. Driving is one of those things that we use as a yardstick to measure our self reliance and freedom and she needed that car to still be hers as it represented her hope to be able to take care of herself again. When we brought her home from assisted living for her last week of life, to spend her last few days in the house she loved, I kept the car parked where she could see it from the window near where she sat. I knew she was ready to go when she signed the title over to me saying it was an early birthday present. If a 2009 Toyota Camry can inspire that much devotion, just imagine what a 914 will do. I would guess most of you already know the answer to that question. Now go check your daily driver and see how many dents, dings, and scrapes have appeared in the last year (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stirthepot.gif) |
