Just once and I didn't like it.

Race was at Miller Motorsports. Pace lap was dry and first lap was also dry but then it started to rain lightly and we all pressed on. Then there was a cloudburst on the front strait with all of us on slicks or Hoosier R7's. Everyone was hydroplaning. I nearly speared a GT3. Watch to the end and see a white 911 do a 720 - it's only about a one-minute video.

I love canyon carving or any driving at high speed in the rain. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) This requires the most skill and is the most rewarding to me. I never go out on the first day, only after a day or two of enough rain to clean the roads.

a wise man.

yeah the old oily road phenomena is a big one down here.
lots of dry weather in north antarctica lets the crap build up on roads big time.
then as soon as it rains you can watch the fun.
though with traction control aids in modern cars you don't quite see the carnage you once did in the not that distant past.

-----

back to the question. my 914 doesn't see much if any wet weather. i am in preservation mode these days as it is an unrestored survivor and there is rust there - how can there not be. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) hiding away. the idea is to slow its inevitable growth to something that lasts as long as me. My father daily drove the 74 from new until it broke down in 1992. It was brought back to life in 2004-2005. Since then I have drive it in dry weather and have only been caught once during light rain on the way home from work on year. It hides in the garage during the rainy season on a CTEK battery maintainer. It does have some small rust areas but nothing major. Like others have stated I'm more in preservation mode with the car.

I would be a smart @$$ and say that I live in Phoenix, What is "rain"???
But we've been getting a lot of rain the last few days and even some golf ball size and larger hail.
I do try to avoid what little rain we normally get.

Not on purpose and my car is not rain-worthy whatsoever, but one time years ago I was on-track at Streets of Willow and it suddenly started coming down. The main thing I remember is near-zero visibility whereas traction was relatively OK, obviously with reduced cornering speeds. IIRC I was on DOT-R Hoosiers or whatnot back then vs full slicks.

I have a DD’er with great wipers and good weatherstripping for wet weather.
When I do get in rain in my teener I like to use compressed air to remove residual moisture from the windshield channel, under the “frunk” and trunk seals, tail lights etc. then leave the doors and frunk/trunk open for a couple days.

Do you wash it? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) is it made of sugar? Drive it like you stole it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

Sometimes. I live in Oregon, after all and rain is what we do. Last weekend I went on a PCA club drive. There were about 25 different cars by the time we started off. Lots of newer stuff, the 911 variants (I can't keep up with the 9xx numerology), Cayennes, Boxsters, Panameras, etc. Only two teeners, my '74 2L and Bob's 1970 914-6. It rained for the first third of the tour, but cleared for the rest of the day. Total mileage, including to and from home, about 180 miles.

Can't be afraid of rust. These are fifty year-old cars. Like Rosanne Roseannadanna said, "You know Jane, it's always something. If it's not one thing, it's another."

For snow, I'll generally not take it out after the first salting of the season. For rain, I just send it.

Salt is the one thing that I DO try to avoid.
The last campout of the year is early December. Like you, my cars have no HVAC - but I can layer my clothes. But I can't layer out of salt, and the salt is what will kill these cars fast. Water dries, salt stays. USUALLY they have not started brining the roads for the December camp, but I have wimped out and driven a modern car when an early storm brought the salt trucks out early.

I have taken my 914 from Wisconsin to the west coast and back quite a few times. Once I figured to get away from the Wisconsin late winter I would go to a Route 66 event. Snow and freezing rain in Arizona. I have the intermittent wiper system from a Golf and can set it any interval I want. Still, I avoid rain…

And never drive when the salt season is upon us!!

I got caught in the rain a few years ago, but I used to drive in the rain all the time because my 914 was my work vehicle. I probably shouldn’t have knowing the chassis was made of sugar.
