It took me 42 years to get my 73 914 restored, so I sure in the heck ain't driving in the rain on purpose. Have been caught in some rain twice and made me about half sick! All you have to do is spit on a 914 and it starts to rust!

OK I will admit I did drive through rain a few times back in the early '70's when driving from Iowa to Daytona for the 24 hour...

I’m fine with driving a 914 in the rain, life’s too short. I am however super annoyed by the pathetic window to targa seal situation that the factory settled on! It should be better imo. But this subject brings up a question that I’ve wondered about - does adding a spray on type bedliner product to the floors, actually do a better job with standing water? Butyl panels tend to trap the water over time, if the seals are less than perfect (and are they ever perfect?).

Thanks. Yeah, the warts are butt ugly and they were in horrible condition on this original bumper. Also, where they were at is where the bumper is bent from someone running them into something..

I had a 71 back in 1984 and drove it in the rain. I didn't realize then that rust wasn't caused just by road salt. On a 914 it's caused by ANY moisture.

Here's my 71 from 1984. I painted my 73 a similar blue to replicate this car. I had planned on putting the hokey IMSA air dam on my 73 too, but I painted it before checking how it fit. It didn't fit, so would require considerable work and would have to be repainted. Discovered that my dad had put the original chrome bumpers away in a barn. I thought I had scrapped them years ago. Once I took a good look at them and hit them with chrome polish, they were in amazingly good shape. Rear bumper required new rubber on top. Rubber on front bumper isn't perfect but doesn't look too bad.

My 914 isn't a show car so don't mind getting caught in the rain. Even headed out on rainy days to events. Only have time to drive it about six times a year anyway so figure I'm not hurting much when/if rain happens.

Anyone at the second day of the porsche parade autocross this year saw me driving in the rain. Sadly the Panorama listed my car incorrectly, I took first (only competition was a beautiful 72 911 RSR) in modified in a 73 914 2.0. They listed me driving a 2016 GTS or something I could only dream of owning. It is correct in the online results for the parade but not in the magazine.

That was a crazy storm/tornado warning kinda rain.

Seriously though, I do try to avoid it as my car gets squirrely in any kind of standing water.
