has anyone ground down or even offset ground the rod journals on their crank to use other rod choices?? ive heard of rabbit and toyota rods being used in a type 4.

These SCAT scirroco rods are 299.00, and are 470 gram H beam 1.992 journal size.... not that much under a stock 2L journal...

The way I understand it. Going with a type 1 journal opens up more choices but, then you need to 22 mm wrist pins and different pistons.

you can always turn a crank journal down... but its harder to weld it up to a type 1 journal

i have a scat 78 4340 crank...with 2.0 journals...

True enough. How about Chevy journals. I don't know the size but there must be a ton of choices.

I'm outta ideas, I wish I had the rod journal dimensions of my DPR 78 mm crank. Maybe if you ask Jake really nice he might give you an idea. Wish I could help you out with more info but I never measured that dimension. I know the rod bearings were Mahle and the box the connecting rods came in were marked T1. I also know that the crank was welded but I always assumed it was to get the extra throw but maybe they welded the journal and reground it. I don't know but, now I'm kind of curious.

This is a forged 4340 chromoly crank... pretty cool.

agreed, i WISH it had type 1 journals on it, lots of cheap rods out there.
next smallest size is t he 2" chevy. wonder if the crank could be welded up to a chevy.....
then there is the lowly 2.0l journal.... small.

but if you go a tad smaller than a 2L, you get back into VW rabbit scirocco 4340 and titanium rods cheap....

again. just thinking outloud

The other thing you have to worry about is clearance -Clarance....

The rod bolts can cause much fun with the 914 cam and that usually limits your rod choices quickly.

If you can pass that hurdle....

Porsche makes a set of rods that correct some of the power problems with a T4 motor...

BUT YOU'RE GONNA NEED SIX OF THEM.

We have used Chevy PINK rods a couple of times.
They worked great and there nice and strong aswell as cheep!
You use under size bearing to make it work. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

For the uninformed "Pink" rods are heavy duty SBC factory connecting rods. There are better aftermarket options, but when Don was using them there probably not the aftermarket support that there is now.

Of course you could always use the rest of the SBC parts as well.

Ha! I showed my age there! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)
Yea, That was 20+ year ago.
But you could sitll use an Eagle pink rod.
But now when we build them we use Pauter rods.
The Pauter's t shaped rods let air flow thru the case the best.
Were the Carrilos are H shaped and trap air. It may be small.
But! When your in the search for HP and quicker revs every little thing helps. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Aaron, the scriocco rods won't work, a clearance issue, the bolts are in the wrong way, and the journal size (1.992) is larger than the 2.0 ltr(1.967).

There isn't much of a choiuce for rods for the 2.0 ltr journal, other than the stock rod, which is bullet proof, but weigh's to much, and is to short, and way to short (5.160) for anything over a 75mm stroke.

Also, the T1 and chevy rods are anywhere's from .890 to .945 wide and the 2.0 ltr rod is 1.010 wide.

What to do?

Jake, list a 2.0 ltr rod, 5.4 length, in his store, I mailed him about it, he replied: it's in the tail end of developement and won't be ready anytime soon.

You mentioned, having that Scat crank welded up, and having it cut for T1 or chevy journals. And if you did that, it would cost you as much, if not more, than buying a crank out right, thats allready done (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/happy11.gif). And if you had it welded up and recut, you'd have to have the mains recut, then the mains would be .020 under and you havn't even ran it yet.

You could have rods made, expensive $$$$$$, steel rod, anywhere's from $170 to $220 apiece, Titanium about $465 apiece.

Or you could use the rabbit rods, crank turned down for the rabbit rods $125 to $150, have the crank heat treated around $100, rabbit rods, purchased then set up for the crank, around $150 to $200.

This didn't help did it (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/happy11.gif)
