Jacky Ickx had an interesting quote about driving F1 at the 'Ring...

"you keep your head down until it gets quiet, and then you wait some more."
"Why?"
"because the quiet *could* mean you're flying through the air..."

Why doesn't he get out?

1) it probably hurts like hell...
2) he's against the "guide" rail auf links and the door won't open.
3) cars are still flying past ontrack; inside the cage is probably the safest place to be, especially if someone else goes off in the debris field.
4) that's where the radio is.

Wow, I would like to see the outside camera shot of that. Its truly amazing to me that cars going that fast and crash that hard that the drive is 1) alive 2) awake and talking 3) the car isn't in a pile the size of a tuna can.

Oh, and I think I heard a few german cus words while he was talking. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) ouch....!

I wonder what caused the car to spin
Doesn't look like a driver error. Weird sound when the car looses grip

This also shows the danger of the Ring... no run-off area what so ever
Imagine this happening to a car without a full rollcage (which frequently happens) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)

unless i am mistaken, very early in the driver's radio communication to the crew he says basically, "flat tire left rear and i went flying..."

he is telling the crew over radio that he is ok., has damaged his left rear wheel , crashed the car and now will leave it. Somebody outside the car is telling him that he lost his left rear wheel!

No wonder that he made such a nice 360(or what) turn (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

best thing is: he is not hurt.

At first it almost seems like he got tapped. There's a car that flying by as he comes to a stop... but on second thought... the broken wheel theory makes sense.

That's a damn cool rearview-mirror ornament...

Googled drivers website from German to English, http://www.basseng.de/

5km after passing Uwe Alzen stricken 996 Turbo, Basseng's output shaft tap (threads??), on which the tie rod is fastened, fallow (failed) and the wheel nut with the tie rod flew away, the wheel wound itself under the car.

And then Marc was only spectator: "I went off like a rocket. The speed was not so high, it has begun with approx. 140. When I took off, I had still good 100 drauf. The Porsche rose backwards highly, laterally with the door over the soil and then into the guard rail hit and then has the car begun a wheel to strike. By radio I announced and thought the accident to the box first of tire damage. One first at the accident scene cleared me up that I would have lost a wheel."
