Hey folks. I still find myself contemplating the "point-and-shoot" prospect for my 914. Wasn't the Corvair a mid-engined job with some pretty honkin' aircooled mills involved? Considering the domestic origins of these vehicles some of 'em were bound to have auto transmissions as well, correct? Has anyone ever seen or heard of this kind of set-up stuffed in a 914? -K-

The corvair was a rear engined, air cooled car. The transmission used standard saginaw 4 speed parts, so to get it to work, they made the engine turn backwards from most normal engines. But the tranny parts can be mixed and matched with a saginaw 4 speed, and you end up with a bolt together mid engine tranny.

Hey, thanks for all your replies. I just spoke with a technician at "Clarks" the Corvair shop, and he told me that I could install the drive-train "backwards" and flip the differential to get what I'm after. So here I go off to e-bay to try and find a parts Corvair. Wish me luck! -K-

In the search results above you may find it better to get the reverse cam. Seems like a better choice.

OK I see the link to the search didn't work,

The discussion around here centered around the power going to the helix (?) gears of the diff or the tranny because the thrust was headed the wrong direction.
Well, somebody else can explain it better tham I can.
