You can't turbo a 914!

There, I was the first to say it! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

You can. Do a search.

Nope, no aftermarket off-the-shelf bolt-on Type-IV turbo kits currently available.

Everything you've probably seen is a one-off custom setup; bring $$$.

Ben has one...and Evil Ed did one he sold...

Stockwise a 1.7 can be done with low boost.
You need aftermaket FI (some have even done junkyard CIS) and that costs a bit to a lot.

The type 4 doesn't like boost, so you need to do a lot of research before you dive in.

I'm sure Ben will show up here, but you don't have to bring big money to do this, as long as you're willing to fabricate stuff yourself. You WILL need some kind of alternative fuel injection system (D-Jet won't really work, and carbs are dreadful in turbo apps), which will cost you some money and/or time to do it. It's best to get the EFI setup first, and get it working and tuned NA before you start applying the turbo bits.

The major problem with putting a turbo on a Type IV appears to be keeping the heads seals to the cylinders. A 1.7 with the stock-sized 90mm cylinders apparently works vastly better than a 1.8 or 2.0 with their bigger cylinders. As far as I know, no one has done any serious longevity testing on a turbo'd Type IV, so don't expect a long engine life with a turbo, esp. if you crank the boost up.

I haven't seen Ben post much lately...and I'll be wanting to pick his brain (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

What turbo on a 94mm nickies X 78mm, SDS FI engine for instance (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

you may be right on that, all i've seen are 1.7's that have had this done, and mostly vw's, will take a lot of research it looks like, maybe i should just keep looking for a high per. carb motor, any ideas where to find any? well really all i need is one.

He's posted today, in fact. I think he has a used Subaru turbo off a 1.8. For the engine you're contemplating, perhaps looking at a single turbo off an EJ25T would be the hot ticket. The advantage of a small turbo, though, is quick spool up to give you a nice low-end punch, it just limits boost, which really needs to be held down on a T4, anyway.

You can't turbo a 914. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) running joke.

I ran 7 psi on my stock 2 liter without head gaskets and with USA pistons.
No problemo with sealing the heads to the cylinders. I ran it for a year, Shmark ran it for a couple more. It was a tired engine when I started with it, all I did was clean up the top end and do rings. Jake is the only one I know of that has ever reported a head sealing problem. That may be due to him running a higher boost level than the rest of us.

Type 4s like boost, it really wakes them up. But, as with every engine ever invented, too much boost is too simply much. With a type 4, that level is normally between 6 an 7 psi without an intercooler on a stock engine. Yes, you can go much bigger, much bigger. All it takes is cubic dollars and R&D.

Run em rich, keep em cool, back off the timing a bit, and have fun. Oh yeah, one more thing: don't get stupid with the boost controller. One time I accidentally disconnected the waste gate and didn't realize it. The boost guage pegged at over 1 bar, I heard the pinging even though I was only on it for a split second. It didn't hurt the motor but I'm sure it would have if I had stayed in it longer.

CIS is the way to go for reliability and simplicity, go with aftermarket EFI if you are a closet computer programmer.
I used a weber DCOE side draft carb but I don't recommend that. Major PITA getting it jetted and adjusted juuuuuust right.

I wonder if the 1.8's L-Jet system can be adapted with a supercharger setup... That would be an interesting project.

L-Jet frequently just tops out at some point, so you don't actually get any more fuel past a certain airflow. The forced-induction L-Jet systems I've seen on other cars always had some method to add fuel based on manifold pressure to get boost fuelling. There are a couple of "extra injector" systems out there (SDS has one) just for this.

CIS would be a better choice, as it doesn't top out until boost gets really silly, but PEFI would be best of all, esp. if it can also control ignition.

The main trouble with putting a blower on a T4 would the relative difficulty in getting an intercooler plumbed in. I really don't think you want to run any blown T4 w/o an intercooler unless you were planning on rebuilding the engine only a bit less frequently than drag racers do.

Thats really just too pretty for words... Where does the intercooler sit so that it gets cool air? A modified engine lid or somehting like that? Or a scoop that goes over the rear glass like that dual supercharged english cat has set up?

Yeah, it is in the back of my 912.

The goal was to run the stock engine lid and NO tail. I will probably mount fan on the underside of the intercoolers for sucking air through. I am also think about water injection.

I hab 2 comments:
1) Ben's brain had been picked clean last I checked.
2) Britians motor is lovely, but he'd better get it running & sorted by next season to defend the CA AX contingent ...he's on his own as none of them candyasses will come up to play.

I'm done....did I miss offending anyone? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Oh, wait.
Anybody that wants a turbo t-4 has a bolt loose. For proof, I offer up Sammy. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)
