So, last night I got frusterated with trying to take off the targa bar and trying to get the A/C compressor / hoses out. The clamps holding the hoses are all turned the wrong way for me to get at them elegantly, and I don't want to cut them if I can avoid it.

So, I got the angle grinder out, put on a new wire brush, and went in anywhere that I sw paint bubbling or where there was bad surface rust.

In the trunk, I found a patch that had been covered over. I knew there would be rust there, so no biggie.

Took several paint bubbles down to bare metal - no rust, just a crummy re-spray. Found a little front end damage on both forward turn signal - but no rust to speak of.

Front trunk where the A/C condenser was - totally clear. I really thought I would find some rot there. Man, have I really come away from this with no suprises?

In the cabin, I saw a paint bubble on the firewall, under the battery tray. I just touched the grinder to it and _POOF!_ a section of firewall just dissapeared. Damn! Grind, grind, grind, grind away the bad. Its only a small section, but I had not expected to find it. It actually does not look like the normal battery tray rust. It seems more like that rubber pad on the engine side trapped water and dirt against the metal and rusted it away.

I really need to drop the motor and get rid of that pad! See what other suprises it may hold for me.

But I found some rust on my rust free 914. I am officially in the club now. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif) Come on christmas. Daddy needs a new welder... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/welder.gif)

So, any one in the Baltimore MD / York PA area free to help a noobie drop his engine? I'll provide meat and beer....

Well, its not from welding...

But I do have some scars on my hands from molten lead. Note to self, don't put the dipper into the water bucket and then back in the lead pot, dumbass. *sigh* Talk about not paying attention... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/owned.gif)
