Now that I'm back in the land of stock 4-cylinder cars, I'm figuring out how much "normal" 914 trivia I've forgotten.... Hmmm...
Anyways, how many different types of stock steel 914 wheels are there? Nobody seems to like them, and it's not covered that much here or in books. I can easily identify: 1. steel 5-bolt wheel with hub cap: (IMG:http://www.streamload.com/steve/914/914_steel_wheels/six1.jpg) (IMG:http://www.streamload.com/steve/914/914_steel_wheels/six2.jpg) 2. stamped steel 4-bolt wheel w/o hub cap (I believe later cars only and always 15x5.5; this is the ugliest wheel I've seen in my life (my orange car used to have these)): (IMG:http://www.streamload.com/steve/914/914_steel_wheels/ugly1.jpg) (IMG:http://www.streamload.com/steve/914/914_steel_wheels/ugly2.jpg) 3. steel 4-bolt wheel with hub cap (smaller holes; do these have the same hubcap as the six? as a 356? as a vw? was this only 4.5" or also 5.5"? did the hubcap have a crest or not? is that a painted wheel with chrome hubcap or all chrome? so many questions!) (IMG:http://www.streamload.com/steve/914/914_steel_wheels/four1.jpg) (IMG:http://www.streamload.com/steve/914/914_steel_wheels/four2.jpg) (IMG:http://www.streamload.com/steve/914/914_steel_wheels/four3.jpg) Others? -Steve |

3 for the 4, maybe 2 of 'em available in chrome, maybe not, and one painted and one chrome for the 6. The 4s used VW hubcaps, the 6s used 356C/911 hubcaps. The Cap'n

So is the 4 "hub-cap steel wheel" a VW wheel too (as well as a VW hub cap)? -Steve |

The later "stamped" steel wheel has a different offset for 914 than for VW I believe. Not sure about early steel wheel. Earliest were 4.5", later 5.5 (both "small hole").
I think the latest wheel can be made to look a lot better with a stainless "beauty" rim. |
