Hi Y'all:

I hope its ok to post this question here, as I don't know your rules.

We have a '74 914 that has been sitting around for years that we've decided to sell and have no idea what it is worth. This car has been owned by us for 29 years or so. We bought it from the original owner in '76.

It's a Special Edition model that was black and yellow. The reason I say "was" is because I painted the rocker panels, aprons and wheels black, thereby eliminating the yellow. However, all the serial numbers would match and verify it as a Special Edition.... don't know if that makes it more "special" but I'm sure you'll let me know. Other than painting the yellow over, I installed the plastic lens type thing that runs between the two rear tailight lens and relocated the fuel pump due to vapor lock.
Otherwise, the car is totally stock and in good to excellant condition. The speedometer quit working at 17,000 miles and a new one was recently installed so the actual milage is not verifiable. Having owned the car almost its whole life and knowing the usage and storage history, I feel confident that the actual milage is around 60,000 and would sign an affidavit as such. If you inspected the car, you'd probably guess less...that's how good of shape its in.

It has sat over the last ten years or so with very little use but always inside. So we took it to an independent porsche mechanic and had it gone over from top to bottom at great expense.... probably should have let the prospective buyer do this as I'm hoping they will be an enthusiast and would like to do it themself. The alternator is going out and will need replacement.

Paint, body and interior are good to excellant condition and original, except my painting over the yellow.

So, what is the price range that a vehicle like this would fall into?

I know you have a classified section here but are there other good places to advertise?

Thanks in advance for any and all input. I've been searching your forum for awhile and know there is a lot of knowledge out there.

Thanks Again!

Doug

Welcome, and thanks for posting.

It's hard to put a finger on 914 values right now, the market is pretty odd. Some really nice cars have had trouble bringing decent money, and a few cars have sold for considerably more than they would have in the past.

The most money seems to be going to the very original cars finally. Post some pictures and I'm sure you'll get a good idea from everyone here.

Pictures first. We need them. The more the better. If it's been sitting, does it run? Will it need hoses, brakes, etc? Make sure the numbers get posted here for the LE specialist. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

I checked the FAQ and it looks like the few photos I do have are too big. So I made a Yahoo photo album. Just copy and paste this to your browser.... hope it works. P.S. I'll get better pictures up soon..... Thanks! Doug

too bad you painted over the yellow. an original LE (with the yellow) in good condition can bring quite a few $$$. i wouldn't be surprised to see a very nice example to go for anywhere between $10k-$15k on a good day.

i hope you didn't drill holes in the rear panel to install that reflector! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/huh.gif)

how about rust? trunk floors? floorpan behind seats? "hell hole" under the battery tray? does the car come with a COA?

all this will affect the price ...

Yep what Andy said........when selling a car look at it in reverse of when you are buying........read THIS and it will give you an idea what buyers are looking for....

If you're not in too big of a hurry to sell it, I would price it high. I only suggest this because true LE (Special Edition) cars should go to owners who can appreciate them. Pricing your car high will weed out the people who are looking for a beater and will narrow the field to those who are truly interested in these special cars.

SIRANDY & GWN7:

Great info there.... There is no rust anywhere. Believe it or not, I repainted the yellow with rattle cans back about 25 years ago. I'm bettin' I could buff out the black & get down to the yellow but what would be wrong with repainting it, other than it's not the original paint?

I forgot about the decal I pulled off, can you still order them somewhere?

Bowlsby's site is awesome. Seems like it'd be easy to get a COA.

You guys are great!

Yes, repainting it back to original would increase the value. To see some other ideas about Bumblebee's take a look at This thead for pics of another one that was saved.

The side stripes are available thru a member here. Look in the parts & resources section of the board. The thread is Here

Does the car run? You mentioned you had it looked at by someone, but never mentioned how it runs?
