Hi,
Question from someone new to 914's. I have a 1977 914 FI 2.0L. Having looked at the various internet resources things do not add up. The attached photo shows the original color of the car, the photo makes the car look more orange that what it does in life and normal lighting conditions. Everyone who has seen it says it is red. I read the stamp as 98, but by the paint code chart it should be met blue or something like that. Any one got an idea what I have going on here?

Sounds like Phoenix Red. We need a picture of the VIN sticker on the back side of the drivers door jamb.

Well, it looks to be original paint, judging from the VIN sticker. I'd say you have a custom color car there. And I would guess it's guards red.

I had my car painted guards red...I was not happy...I was told it was the deep red (Like SirAndy's car).....

But there is alot of orange in guards red...I was new and did not know...

I believe that guards red was available for the 911 as a stock color in 1974....so could have been an available color for the L98 option.

There has been more than one color with the name "Guards Red" It depends on which year "guard red" you choose.

Our track car is a "special" blend red with guards red as the base.

It makes others with guards red cry as their cars look orange in comparison.

I believe Guards Red has always been the same blend.
I have owned a 1987 Carrera in Guards Red
an 1987 944 Turbo in Guards Red
and a 1999 Boxster in Guards Red

All of the touch up paints are interchangable, with no real difference when used on another of the Guards Red cars.
Actually it is a dead match for VW color called Tornado Red.
Owned a Golf in that color also.

Yes it has a lot of orange in it in direct sunlight.
See shot of my Boxster chasing a nice yellow '74 Carrera at Buttonwillow.

As you probably all know, paint code 98 is "Color to sample, previously used Porsche color" As you can see from my attached picture, my car is also code 98. The only reason I know that my cars color is Sahara Beige is because when I bought the car from the original owner, he told me. My car also still has the original "Lackstift" touch-up paint container that came with the car that says Sahara Beige on it. Unfortunately Porsche has no record for the actual color used on 914's with codes 98 or 99. They only know that it is color to sample.
