Christmas is coming and my sweetie's gonna get me some racing sim gear and software. Platform is Win XP PC. Is there a good one with 914's? I've got an old Win 98 version of "Need for Speed" but I know there must be way better stuff out there now. How about input devices, wheels, pedals, etc?(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif)

Get a wheel/pedal setup, and wait for GT Legends to show up in the Spring. It covers the 70s, and includes the 914, along with other 70s sports and GT cars.

No 914's in it, but find a copy of "grand prix legends" or GPL there is a huge online following for this game . The learning curve for this "game" is steep the cars are hard to drive and slide around alot like a street car (way overpowered street car) does on a track. Most realistic driving feel I have ever played with. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif) It even supports a clutch pedal, and it runs great on a non state of the art pc just fine.

According to the website, it's out now.
GT Legends OOPS Not out in the US until 2/2006. Looks like it's playable online. If it's good, I'll be setting up a server. |

There is a old "Need for Speed" Game that was a special Porsche version and had only porsches and the 914. The 914 was a drag to drive, very unrealistic. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

I have been playing the GT LEGENDS demo for a little while now........IT ROCKS!!!! It is important to take out lots of the steering sensitivity though. Way too much oversteer. Also......your computer has to be up to par cpu wise, and a decent 256mb video card.

I really like Playstation2 and GT4.
Helped me learn Sears and Laguna before actually driving them in the 914. Very realistic and mostly accurate. The "right" line is rewarded. KT |

I have this game. Real cool, Formula 1 in 1966, before wide tires, electronics, and wings. Keeping the car on the road is real tough. Does good donuts too, leaving rubber on the track too. If you over-rev the engine, it will explode and parts will fly up in the air, along with purple smoke. Spoke |

I third this recomendation, but out of the box it's not very attractive. There are a TON of mods for this. There is a community much like we have here for this game and keeping it alive. |

Hehehe.. i love free demos
Grand Prix Legends I also have NFS Porsche unleashed on my harddrive (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) The do not compare w/ GT4 on PS2 however. Gt4 is 10 times more realistic, but possibly not as fun (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) BJH |

GPL is still IMHO one of the best simulations out there. It didn't get popular because it is probably too hard for the average PC gamer. It took me 6 months before I could win my first race (on realistic mode). But like Seanery says, find the downloadable maps and upgrades, tracks, etc., and the realism is even better.
I ran Gingerman in my Formula Vee, came home and downloaded the track, set up the Eagle to respond just like a Vee, and the realism blew me away. I've been racing it for 5 years now and it still is as difficult as the day I started. My fellow FV buddies get on-line and use it like an off-season training tool - sort of. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) Last weekend I ran Project Gotham on a X-360 - the graphics are cool, but the vehicle dynamics are like a high-priced video game. http://gplea.rscsites.org/ or http://trackdb.d2g.com/? GTR the game that is out now with modern GT class cars (GT Legends is based on this engine) is a really fun game with easy modes to get started and you can work your way up to full SIM mode. I have been playing it for a few months and it is a blast. Driving a 600hp GT2 porsche is a kick...plus its got a real nice multiplayer mode for when you get your firends together.
And a big plus is you can pick up GTR at most of the stores now for 20bucks or less...and it will get you ready for GT legands when it comes out in a few months...I can't wait... Tony |

been hooked on the NFS... underground 2 it's pretty cool... a bit ricer though
NFS most wanted is out too.... if you like the Hot Pursuit-like NFS games... NFS: porsche Unleashed was really the Best NFS game though... damage, etc... very cool... you can D/L the 914-6, too I'm looking forward to GT legends... one of the dislikes I had for a long time with PC- racing games, was the lack of good controllers, about 2 years ago I bought a Gravis X-Terminator... that thing RULES!!! I need to get a steering wheel/pedal setup... |

If you run GPL. You really need good pedals (or just rewire the ones you have) that have a separate axis for the brake and throttle. Most pedals just sum the 2 pedals (applying the on brakes is the same as letting off the throttle) because game designers don't understand vehicle dynamics. GPL does the physics use both the brake and throttle as separate inputs - you can trailbrake, load the front tires with the brakes while still at full throttle etc. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif)

yea, NFS sux at that... if you apply the brake, you are not giving throttle... letting off the gas is different than applying brakes, but you can't use both at once (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) |
