One vote for beer?
Some of you may think it's not a tool but it is.
with enough leverage and repeat action I can actually warp my perception and mute the voices in my head.

You forgot to add a Jack and Jackstands.

Most projects would never get off the ground without those items.
But with them, 914 restoration can really be an uplifting experience.

ratchet followed by checkbook...

ratchet helps you get the part off in time to realize, "i'm going to have to replace this while I'm in there to do it right...

I voted for beer (with a handle like "zymurgist" could you expect any different?)... but the best thing I ever bought for my garage was an upright compressor with a 60 gallon tank. I use it for:

- Blowing leaves and whatnot out of the garage/blowing dirt out of electrical connectors with the air nozzle
- Removing wheels with impact wrench
- Grinding metal with die grinders
- Cutting bolts etc. with cutoff tool
- Powder coating
- Topping off tires to the correct pressure
- Brake bleeding with handy sucky-sucky device
- Cutting with mini reciprocating saw (911 project)
- Yadda yadda yadda; I find new air tools all the time

Now the only thing it can't tell me is why Babydoll won't start.

Don't want to thread-jack, but could I get some info on brake bleeding via airtools? That sounds great!

I have one of these. Got it for free from a FOAF who is a mechanic.

You can disassemble an entire 914 with those....

Cool, but costs more than some people's 914 (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)
