there are 5 wires that are routed around to the dist. area, two are green, one has a red stripe.Where do they connect?
there are two black, one with a cream stripe one with a red stripe. I think the cream stripe wire connects to the + side of the dist and the other to the - is this correct? This is the wire harness that connects to the reay board, driver side, engine bay. There is a green wire that branches off the 4 red main power wires not sure where that goes.??? Lastly there is a grounding lug ontop of the fan housing on the motorpassenger side not sure what that is for.?? thanks guy's, sorry, no digi. camera for pics. This is what you are *supposed* to have up to 1972 coming off the relay board.

Black and Purple go to the Negative side of the coil (same side as the condensor) This is your tach wire.
Black with Red is your Positive side of the coil. DO NOT GET THESE MIXED UP. Item number 6 is the coil in this pic. B |

Green with a red strip is your oil pressure switch wire.
White wire is the power for the Aux air regulator (controlled vaccuummmmm leak for cold start) B |

Your cream stripe is your tach wire.
You have to be really careful with this wiring. I have seen many of them butchered/hacked over time. Hook up the tach wire and power wire backwards and you will let all the smoke out of the wire. B |

This is for the oil temp sending unit on the bottom of the engine. The wire for it should pass through the grommet for the throttle cable and plug into it. It should have a plastic protector over the connection. It is for the center console temp gauge or the 74 dash mounted oil temp gague. B |

I'm glad I asked I had the two black wires switched. The green and red wire connects to the sending unit atop the oil cooler??

I have NO idea. Early cars had the heater fan mounted on the fan shroud and used a solid green wire to power the fan. From the wire colors you have.. it sounds like you have a early production 73 (made in Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec or 1972 B |

the production run was 10/72 but it has a heater fan mount on the driver side engine bay. the green and black wire is taped back to the harness as if it was not used. This helps me a great deal, the shit box should be running soon.

Damn.. how did I guess that?? Oh yeah.. lots and lots of useless 914 info in my pee brain..
Leave the wire alone.. they were caught in the middle of change over during production. B |

Hm. I'm pretty sure the colors to the coil are black/red and black/purple. Both tend to fade enough over time that they both just look black. Black/cream may be what's SUPPOSED to be there for the tach wire, but I've seen a '73 and a '74 that have black/purple for the tach wire instead of black/cream.
Green/black is the oil temp sender wire. If you don't have an oil temp gauge, it won't be connected to anything, but it will be there in the harness, anyway. The only wires you NEED to get the car running are the black/red wire to coil + and the fuel pump wire (which is also black/red, but connects to the relay board at the 14-pin "forward" connector, where the coil + wire attaches to the 12-pin "aft" connector). The white AAR wire is nice if it's cold out. |

since were on the subject of helping, have you ever used the pennington FI trouble shooting book? I have it and am not sure if I need to get power to the FI brain to do all the checks it calls out for.

You are correct, the wires are black and red , black and purple. The fuel pump wires have been routed to the front where I relocated the fuel pump. This checke d out fine.
