I have the 3.2L engine, trans and entire suspension from a 2003 Boxster S with only
22,000mi. on it. I was going to sell it to fund my six conversion on my '73' 914. My question is can this be installed in my 914 and how hard is it? Has any of you done it before? Am I nut to even attempt it (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif) Is it worth the efford? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) should I sell and put the money into the 2.2L engine I have and rework my 901 trans. David |

yes & yes (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) Jason is in the process of doing just that. but be warned, *MAJOR* cutting of the tub is required ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sawzall-smiley.gif) as far as i know, you'll need to move the suspension pickup points outward as the boxster engine is too wide. i suspect custom transmission mounts as well ... jasons logon name here is "SilverBullet", you might want to drop him a PM to get some info from him ... anything's possible man.
depends on how good you are with an angle grinder, a welder and how much beer you can drink. with that being said, I have never welded, I dont own an angle grinder and I dont drink. b |

...and budget limited I just saw it this morning and progress is slow until he finds a low profile rear suspension. The stock Boxster strut location is several inches above the rear deck. Forget about the stock 914 trailing arms... BTW, Jason spends very little time on 914club. |

Thanks for the advice, Can the tranny be used with the 2.2L?
I guess I'll sell the engine and put the money into the car.(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/aktion035.gif) Does anyone know what the boxster engine is worth? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) |

I had an inspired vission while going though neo914-6's modern 914 concept . I will now use the
boxster frame and put my 914 GT body on it. That is to say I will put the front and rear hood and the 4 quarters on it and have a 914 GT convertable. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) I did a lot of calculation from the 914 spec and the Boxster specs. Only a few inched seperate the two. A lot of (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sawzall-smiley.gif) and (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/welder.gif) but I will not have to worry about suspension issues, wiring issues nor cooling issues. Plus I'll have a very nice interior with all the modern amenities. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mueba.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif) I will post the pictures as the project gets on its way. |

Sounds very ambitious! There is a NJ member here that has a boxster tranny with his aircooled six.

Thanks guys, But I'm planning to use the entire Boxster's Frame,
sub frame, suspension, engine, interior, doors and anything else I need. I will just be welding the 4 corners from the 914 on to it and using the front a rear hood |

David,
Nice idea, I applaud your willingness to tackle it. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) The Boxster is larger overall in width, height, and length than the 914. Rearranging the proportions can be detrimental as seen in many kit cars or replicas. It can also be done to improve the design... |

Neo your right, But the overall length is about 10-1/2" which is most notable behind the rear wheel well and in the nose. I don't see a problem with the cutting down the rear by 3 to 5 inches. In regard to the nose I will need to stretch the nose of the 914 fenders a few inches and pick up the rest by extending the 916 front bumper as well as modifing it for the grills. The overall wheel base is 1-1/4" longer for the 914. I will adjust that when I weld the fenders to part of the existing fenders that I leave by the door jambs. I will hammer a dolly the flanges to match the 914's fenders shape. The height is 2.4"more for the Boxster, That will not be a problem. The over all width is 6.1" in favor of the Boxster If compared to regular 914 not a GT. So i'll pick up the difference with the flares. This all sounds good in theory (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/assimilate.gif) I'l find out when I start the project (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif) |

Any guesses on how much this is gonna weigh?
For inspiration you should check out that mercedes SLR replica that some guy custom built on an 80s mercedes frame. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) |

The more I think about it the more I like the idea considering Boxsters are getting cheaper and you retain all the modern "guts". (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif)
John Kelly's metalshaping DVD will come in handy. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smash.gif) Can I have the rear Boxster lid? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) |

I have often thought of doing it the other way round...
Apply the fenders and lights etc to a 914... So, if you are cutting them off, or unbolting them..I would like to try it with some spare parts... Rich |
