(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) both (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif)
I use ramps for the rear and then will use jack stand(s) if I need to remove one of the rear tires (0ne tire is on a ramp and the other side has a jack stand) The front is too low for ramps so jack stands are my only option. |

Gots to be careful of them jackstands. Sometimes they get stuck under the car and end up staying there for a couple of years of "While I'm in there, fix this too".

Ramps fry clutches. I never liked driving up a ramp and worrying about driving off the other side. And the car isn't level.
Jack stands are better. Buy 4, a level car is good. Joe is right, sometimes they can actually become welded to the bottom of the car and it takes a long time to get your car off them. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif) |

That's funny.. Jack stands alone make me nervous (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) Most times I will use all 4 jack stands (somewhere below the car) regardless of what I am doing. I will also place the unsed wheel and unused ramp under the car as well. kind of like a bunch of backup/safety systems?? Actually, I'll put a big one to support the weight and put a smaller one in front of it just in case (I was under the car one day and we had an earth quake). Scared the brown stinky stuff outta me. I do this if I am just working on one side or both. If I have to have all 4 off of the ground and get under it I take it to my office and put it on a lift. |

It's funny how that thought doesn't event enter into my head here on the East Coast...having to worry about an earthquake while working on my car (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) That would have scared the (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/stromberg.gif) out of me too. Cheers |

I am using jack stands in back, but came up with a very stable solution for the front. Made the whole car more stable.
Put two cinder blocks side by side and put a pier block on the cinder blocks at their center point. In the cross of the pier block cut and fit two each 2" x 4"s about 6" long so they lock into the top cross of the pier block. You will need to cut a "U" shaped section out of each two by four at their center. Then turn the "u"'s toward each other and press the two by fours together. Cut one more 2' x 4" about 6" long and cut a 2" hole in the center of this 2" x4". Nail this to the two by fours in the cross of the pier block. When you lower the car , put that little round donut at the corner bottom of the car right in the 2" hole of the top two by four. Puts the car about 17"-18" high in the front . Very stable. With two of these up front and jack stands in the rear, I feel a lot more secure when under there pulling and tugging on things. Tom |

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/hijacked.gif) Hey cool, another Modestoian. I lived there for 5 years, and moved east in 1989. Aside from the occational swinging lights, or ripples in the pool, earthquakes were not a big deal in the valley. Zach |

I use ramps, but never drive the car up onto them. I jack up the car and put the ramps under the tires. Very stable. I never really liked a car just on jackstands (and we get earthquakes here).
The real answer to the original question is: a lift. Once you use one, you'll never want to use anything else. I can't afford a complete 4-post lift, and don't really have the room for one, anyway, so I may end up getting a Kwik Lift. Eventually... |

Four jack-stands are a requirement for admission to the club. You might as well get them, because you'll need them sooner or later.

I think the count should be more like seven. Four under the car and three to hold the drivetrain once it's removed. You can never have too many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) I'm afraid of driving off the back of the ramp so jack it up and place the ramp under the tire. Spoke |

I have 4 jackstands, 2 floor jacks and 2 ramps. I use the ramps the most. Not all teeners will be able to be driven up ramps. I am lucky as I can either drive up in front or back up in the rear. Once you have done it a few times, it is no big deal to drive (or backing) up on the ramps. The first few times are a bit gut wrenching though. Eddy
