I have a '72 rust free beautiful car with a low compression 1.7 I can get another 1.7 from a local junkyard for cheap, or for a considerable amount more get a 2.0

How much a difference is a 2.0 from a 1.7?
Tom

As useless as I usually think numbers are....

Stock 1.7 (except 73 CA-only version) -- 80 HP, 95 lb-ft torque.
Stock 2.0 (US version) -- 95 HP, 105 lb-ft torque.

~20% difference in power, ~12% difference in torque.

Big difference in torque, with my 1.7 it feels like I am a little hard on it in day to day driving. I had a 2.0 in there but had a spark plug insert fail and went back to the 1.7. The 2.0 feels effortless cruising around (comparitavely speaking). But, if it was a 2.0 that had some drivability issuse vs. a 1.7 that was tip top - I'd go for the 1.7.

Mileage will be better on a 1.7, but you need to run super. So in the end the dollar per dollar spent at the pump is about the same.

It really depends on the condition of the 2.0 motor. The real 914 2.0 has the three stud intake pattern on the heads. Those are generally good heads to have. Either a stock rebuild or a base for a performance engine, the 2.0 is a good start. What is the price difference?
