as long as there's alt-text for the smilies, could it be what the name of the smilie is ?
we see the name in the quote-text (between the colons) so "how hard could it be" to update that into the alt-text field ? just a thought... (right now, the alt-text just says 'smilie' ...)

If you look at the "status bar" (bottom line of your browser) you'll see the :sumthing: for the smilie when you move your mouse over it...

cheers,

Jeroen
