There are a number of ways to do the compression check. If you have your trans still attached, hot wire the starter to spin the motor over and leave out all the spark plugs. Thread your compression checker into a plug hole and spin away. I feel you get a more accurate reading when you spin the motor with the starter or even an impact air wrench attached to the crank. By leaving out the spark plugs, compression in the cylinder you are testing is the only compression force acting on the engine...instead of the accumulitive effect of having all plugs in at once.

Hope my approach helps (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/aktion035.gif)

IIRC the engine should be WARM not COLD when doing this test.

You could do a leak down test instead. That way you don't have to spin the motor, just crank by hand to TDC for each cylinder. If you want to compare results to a previous measurement of compression this doesn't do you any good however. If you haven't done any of the work yet you could still do a leak down now and again after doing the valve adjust, etc.

your problem is the single carb.

And yes, start the motor right up on the floor.
Wire up starter to battery positve, clip the negative of the battery to the tranny somehow.

you can run it right there...just hold a gas can over the carb...it will provide enough pressure to feed the carb.

but your problem is the carb.

I forgot to mention that when you spin your motor over...it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some oil in it still. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)
