I have a '85 Carrera front end for my project and I'm trying to dissassemble it. I've got the torsion bars out and I'm trying to remove the A-arms. How to you get the A-arms out of the cross member? It seems only the bushings are holding it, but if so, they have a real good hold on it. I've tried a pry bar between the cross member and the A-arm, but its only moved about a 1/4" so far.

Is there anything holding them in?? I just want to check before I break out the big (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smash.gif)

Also, the torsion bars I removed are color coded different. One is blue on the end and one is yellow. Is this a left and right thing or are they different spring rates?

There should be a cup over the rubber bushing that is seated into the cross member...that cup had a long bolt going through it...that is where to pry...

If not, take them outside and light the bushing on fire with a torch,,,get a beer and wait...then they fall apart.

The torsion bars are indeed left and right...they should have a stamp L and R on the front of the bar itself..

The spring rate is normally determined by the diameter of the bar measured in the middle...

just tap it out.

when you want to get the bushings out... you can torch them or grab and pull....

Yup... what Aa said. I've yet to have them pull of but, I use a modified version of what most people seem to recommend.

I take a MAPP torch and get that sleeve that Rich is talking about, just hot enough so the rubber bushings just show a whisp of smoke (not bubbling, boiling and stinking up the garage). I then use a long screwdriver in the mounting holes to twist the covers (front and rear) off. Then I cut them off with a utility knife.

Readers Digest: Just a whisp of smoke. Don't cook them.

Thanks all !

Just thought I'd check before I start whoopin' on it! So, I guess this can never be disassembled and the bushings preserved?

I agree with Eric. I burned one side until there was not much left, I spent quite a while cleaning the goo out. Other side i just got it hot and it twisted right off with a screwdriver - easy cleanup.
