Yep, Renagade has a kit for the swap and can be a very quick ride.

Prob as cheap as converting a 914 and maybe easier since you are starting out with a watercooled car but what do I know (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

944 trani's are strong, probably hold 350hp. 951 trani's are really strong, 500 is probably achivable, and the 968 trani's are the strongest, and also have 6 gears..

HP numbers are just speculation of what i've seen. (many 944 turbo guys are running 500hp)

Renegade quote:
QUOTE
Weight Distribution
Contrary to popular opinion, the superb handling characteristics of the 944 are not decreased by the addition of the V-8 powerplant. In normally aspirated versions of the 944, the weight distribution changes less than two percent. In the turbo cars, the change is less than 1.5 percent. A typical characteristic of a stock 944 is a slight "push" or understeer during acceleration. We have found that with the added weight of the V-8, the "push" condition actually diminishes. Furthermore, the more manageable torque and predictable horsepower allows the driver to easily transfer weight from front to rear allowing for increased car control. Quite simply it is much more fun to drive a converted 944.

I tend to agree with you Andrew, although no numbers stated by Renegade. That's a big clutch like ZF's! :
QUOTE
Trans-Axle
The 944 torque tube and trans-axle remain stock and in their original locations. These components can handle the power output of mild performance motors when used in street driven applications. However, the 944 Turbo trans-axles are stronger and have more favorable gear ratios for the V-8 application.  Automatics are not an option with this kit…sorry.

The bell housing and clutch are custom Renegade components. The one of a kind custom aluminum bell housing adapts the Porsche 944 torque tube to the Chevy small block. The custom clutch disc is a Chevy 10.5 inch high performance disc, with the Porsche center spline.

I have to agree with rennegade, A 944 turbo is very wierd under non boost turning, and it rotates very quickly when on boost (LSD car) I've driven dads race car with and without hoosiers... while its a blast, It was a PITA to drive on street tires (which is how mine was), Driving it was a constant boost lag, spool for a tiny second, let off.. repeat X 5... (on the autox) Now I wouldnt say it wasnt fun throwing it in a corner, floored, and the boost coming on just as I passed the apex... its just difficult to manage..

My v8 car was MUCH easyer to "handle" or predict on the autox course than my dads car on hoosiers.. (for the one lap I drove it)

I would imagine it would be the same 944 turbo vs 944 8

They're quick, but fairly heavy... roughly 600lbs more than a similarly prepped teener. Make GREAT road trip rides though. only car better might be the 928.

There is also a renegade kit for the LS series motors found in the new corvette (among others). All aluminium (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Oh yeah, can be made somg legal in any state.

On the topics of V8s (some porsche content):

This is the western washington formula SAE car (back when it was a competition) called the Viking 30. Its a V8 under 600cc (per rules) built with two yamaha 250 heads and a custom... everything else. Unfortunatly there was a rule change right before the competition so they couldnt compete for points, but the effort prooved worthwhile. One of the team members is a friend of the shop and was actually an engineer for Porsche USA before they closed. He went on to design some bits that went into the Carrera GT.

Me too, unfortunately I have no way of getting that stuff (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif)

Its a really sweet design though. They had like 30 iterations for just the engine.
