Are the stock seats in a 914 really uncomfortable or am I getting soft in my old age? I put an hour behind the wheel in the Fall driving to have some welding done and my ass was killing me! These were the standard seats. I have another pair of recently recovered seats that I am hoping will be better. Has anybody done anything to the stock seats to provide an extra padding for us middle age softies?

I notice even back when I was young they were uncomfortable in the mid section. Right where it starts to angle back a little bit at that point my back would feel it.
So I got some Recaros |

It's AMAZING the difference a modern seat makes in a 914. The stock seats really are uncomfortable. I've used a mid 80s MR2 seat (doesn't quite fit, a tad too wide) and it's much more comfortable. I'm working on adapting some cavalier seats which should fit better. Real springs and foam vs. just foam is where the difference is.

the drive from Seattle to Lancaster for WCC was the true test of comfort. 3 straight days in the saddle buzzing I5 then around SOCAL ...No problem (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif) Could use some lateral support though. I think the stock seats are really comfortable...
But then again I'm young (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) Also the longest trip I've taken in the 914 was only a few hours. |

I've done 20 hours in a 914. Stepped out fresh. I don't think they're all that bad. But ask me again in 10 days. I'm a couple of years older now. That may make a difference.

I bought rebuilt seats from a member here (although I don't know who actually covered then) that clearly have a bit thicker back pad and substantially thicker seat- using a pretty dense foam. It really did make my car significantly more comfortable. Long trios have been no problem and I'm 46. It probably helps that I like to keep my seat tilted back as far as it will go while still being far enough from the pedals.

Only problem I had was lumbar support. Put on sheepskins with a pad sewn in and all is well. What hurts?

I go 40 miles a day commuting on some of Sacramento's finest roads. I think the stock seats in my car are very comfortable, though I have to take my wallet out of my pocket. My seat is all the way back, and tipped back. I'm in my mid-late 40's. If it helps devalue my opinion, the last car I loved for long drives was a '68 type 3. It also could be that I haven't sat in any other seat in this car. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

vesnyder, you are getting soft in your old age... but so will all you young wipersnappers too!!
I bought some hand inflatable lumbar support bladders from an automotive upholstery shop. you inflate it using a bulb similar to a blood pressure device in the doctor's office. bleed it with a pushbutton. my bulging disks were murdering me in the 914, but after I added that (not yet installed INSIDE the seat, waiting to reupholster it) it worked great. Manual Version Here are some electric versions: Lumbar electric S.F. to Reno is not exactly an IRON - BUTT cross country motorcycle run.. but that's a practical distance for the seats to be made comfortable. Good stuff! Glad to hear I am not the only one that finds the 914 seats uncomfortable. The limited adjustments do not help. I hope that whoever rebuilt/recovered the seats I am going to put in did something to compansate? I heard of guys putting memory foam (whatever that is?) in rebuilt seats to make old seats more up to date. My 911 seats are a dream compared to these, and they aren't exactly luxurious?

The back cushion is held into the seat by a couple of small hooks that face downward at the bottom. You can push the bottom of the cushion down and toward the back of the car (feel for the wire in there, that's what is captured by the hooks) and you should be able to swing the whole back cushion of the seat out. Then you can put pieces of foam in there--glue several together to make a lumbar support shape--and hook the back cushion up again.
You can also put one of the inflatable bladder things in the same area. But your passengers will look at you funny if you start pumping the support up while driving... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) --DD |
