I'm about to do this myself and haven't decided whether to 'cheap-out' or get actual graphics made. But it seems like the wide smooth vinyl kind of tape would work well, esp. compared to duct tape? I'm thinking of the stuff that is about 2" wide and typically sold for seat repairs, etc? (You would need at least 2 strips).
