HELP!!!!!
My wireless is not worrking on my lap top. I was on line earlier today then left for a couple hours and bam.... I don't know if the kids did something or not, they tell me ohhh no we didn't touch it.. When I click on the icon to trouble shoot, the error comes up as " no wireless networks were foound in range" Make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on" SInce I am about as knowledgeable about computers as I am 914's can anyone help me out? I checked the very basics Cox cable modem, wireless network cables, nothing was touched. I unplugged everything for an hour while doing other things, and then plugged everything in. No go. I'm on my wife lap top, not a problem, so it lead me to believe the kids did something... |

make sure the wifi card is enabled. then find the properties of the wifi card and click the reapir connection button. also make sure you are trying to connect through your router. if you have a WEP key, try re-entering your wep key code. i hope this helps any.

You might want to reinstall the wireless adapters drivers.

i'm helping, can't you see ? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif) - wireless is as secure as a unlocked car with the windows rolled down and the key in the ignition. - it's as un-reliable as a british sports car. - performance is like driving a fiat 500. i deal with those "i need to have wireless because it's cool!" type of guys in the office every day. does your laptop lose it's wireless settings twice a week? do you get logged into other peoples networks all the time without knowing and then wonder why your network printer doesn't work anymore? is your connection "spotty" at best? does it seem to "drop off" a lot and then come back? well, i got good news for you! use a damm CAT5 CABLE ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) what do you need wireless for in the office or at home ??? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) Andy PS: enough "help" for tonight? |

OR
you can reset your hardware. If you are using XP or 2k, goto the command prompt (start run cmd enter) type in IPCONFIG /release then shut down your laptop unplug your power to the modem and access point for 20 seconds. Plug the modem back in wait 30 seconds, plug the WiFi unit back in. wait another 30 seconds, reboot your laptop. Do that in that order, and if nobody changed anything, you should be fine... power down everything and restart.
if it still doesn't work, check blinking lights at cable modem. if they're there, at dos prompt type ipconfig /release then type ipconfig /renew if a new IP is not generated yo have either a connectivity, config, or an ISP problem. |

yeah what he said! I do like to release the IP before rebooting the PC, saves some time and sets a good baseline. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/alfred.gif) |

I am with Andy...
Want a good reason not to use wireless..... People like me. I had to get a wireless card for my notebook because it was the only way to get internet access at one hotel I was staying in. Well, I set it down at home, turned it on and the wireless card hooked up to the neighbors wireless router. So now I get free wireless broadband for my notebook. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) If I need secure access, I will plug into the cat-6 network here in my house. But this is convenient for moving around the house, and I don't pay for the bandwith!!! |

If your notebook is one of those that have built-in wireless...there is gonna be a small switch somewhere on the side that turns on/off the wireless...it's there so you can save battery when you are not using the wireless...like on a plane. You can check to see if that (if that's what you have) is the culprit.

Oh yeah, once you get it working, make sure that you have your security enabled, 64 bit is ok (and a bit faster), but 128 bit is the encryption you should be using for the most secure browsing.

Please don't let these guys scare you off. When properly implemented, wireless works and can be relatively secure. First off, if you have a wireless card in your PC and are attaching to other people's wireless access points, you can do one of two things. You can setup your PC to ONLY attach to preferred, secured networks or you can attach to your neighbors and enjoy the free connectivity. Second, if you are running an unsecured access point, you deserve what you get. Most wireless routers come through with no security as the default. And, most people just plug them in and are happy to be connected. They don't know about security and don't care. If I go to my wife's office and turn on my notebook, I can see at least 10 unsecured networks, all with the SSID of "linksys". Is WEP the best security? No. But very few people have the horsepower or time to crack a 128-bit key. So, lock down your wireless network and enjoy the freedom of mobility that a wireless network provides. |

FYI Clay... You're breaking the law! You have just accessed a network without expressed consent. I know this will open up a can of worms with all you hacker/net security types. You have just committed unauthorized access to a computer network, a third-degree felony.

Even worse, he knowingly committed unauthorized access to a computer network. |
