Just got a Kerry Hunter exhaust and did some test fitting this evening.
The clutch and speedo cables contact the right hand pipes and will melt instantly. How are you guys getting the clutch and speedo cables clear? I seem to remember seeing a picture somewhere of the return roller carrier turned down like 20 degrees or so to get the correct angle of the dangle. Anyone do this? It doesn't seem tough to do, but is there a tip/trick I'm not thinking of? Does anyone wrap their cables in heat shield or the like? Suggestions? As always, many TIA Attached image(s) |

Myt experience is with a Euro header, but it might be the same with Kerry headers. There is a piece of tin that neeed to be removed to fit the header on the 3-4 side. There is a piece on the case that has a threaded hole for a screw to secure said piece of tin. I used copper wire through this hole and snugged the cable up and the wire held them out of the way. Still melted as bit, but not that bad

dude.. just did this.
went to el hot rod shop. buy a velcro heat shield. 36" for 40 bucks... 1000 degree radiant.. 500 something direct... i also made a braket that picked up the warm air guide boss on the sump..... KH headers look easier to hide the cables from.... ER headers were kinda a pain.... |

do you have any pics of the sleeve or the installed result? Thanks what hot rod shop? Had considered removing the shift link cap. or fabbing up some sort of heat shield. Will see on Friday...my next tinkering day (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) |

i can snap some this weekend.....
local hot rod shop. jegs etc may have it... i got the 3/4" diameter stuff. has velcro on one side, so you can slip it over and sinch it down.... |

I ran my speedo and clutch cables below the engine bar using a piece of hose and some zip-ties.
The 20 degree down angle dealy looks good. You'll probably want some heat resistant sleeve for the e-brake cables too. Oh yeah. "What brake cables?" Aaron Header Threader |

Nope easier than that.
Chris Foley showed me how to get the clutch cable out of the way. Lost the picture now. But basically you pivot the clutch bracket on the aft bolt down. and make a small metal tab/bracket to span the front bolt to bracket. He has a good picture maybe he will chime in. doesn't sit too low even in my car. about 1000 miles on the set up so far and haven't melted nuthin. |

I can take a pic of the mod you have to do to the clutch release pulley bracket. It's exactly like Joe describes. I would sell you mine, but I'm keeping it with my header as a set.
My dad bought his header (the one with stub pipes) about 20 years ago and the clutch pulley bracket was part of it. (now they just sit here collecting dust) His came with a Phase 9 muffler and looks different than the one in the picture in this post. My dad wants to keep certain old parts for some unknown (to me) reasons. |

Thanks gentlemen, that's exactly what I was thinking. Very straightforward and simple actually. A simple 2 hole tab will rotate the forward end of the barcket down, thereby clearing the pipes. I just remembered seeing some heat wrap at a Dune Buggy shop near here. I may wrap the cables to ensure it isn't going to be a problem either. |

When I had the big four I had the same issue. We ran the cables over the top of the headers inside several layers of the fire sleeve that Earl's sells at Industrial Liquidators. On top of the header there was a "heat disapator" that was a piece of thin aluminum that was bent in a shape like ^v^v^v^v and clamped to the headers. Cables stayed cool.

That's basically it. The one I have is welded together, not bolted. They left the holes open so it could be used either way. One thing, I do believe that they cut the bracket and opened it up slightly. As the cable leaves the pulley and extends toward the clutch release arm, the cable would get real close to or interfere with the bracket. I believe that they cut that part and opened it up a bit for clearance. |

Dan,
One observation, You should get a small piece of tin and weld it to the top of your exhaust to act as a heat shield directly under your CV Boot. Otherwise it shall melt or turn extra crispy. Since those CV's are unobtanium, you should protect them while you can. Our header came with something like that. Good luck to you. |

My jobs for tomorrrow. Decide on exact running of cables, where I need to fab some metal heat shields...like below the CV boot. And decide about the heat wrap placement. Going to a hot rod shop tomorrow to pick up some heat wrap. For the heat shields I am going to use some light guage sheetmetal or aluminum and then use some metal pop rivets to SS hose clamps and then attach to appropriate spot on header. Going to get all my exaust gaskets inplace an button up the headers. Then finally on to the rear suspension. |
