> 944/951 stub axles? Aaron Cox? Andy?, Which 944/951 are needed for 6 bolt CVs?

I'm changing to 6 bolt 951 CVs like Andy and Aaron.

I need some education on the differences in 944/951 stub axles and whichones will work. I have been told there are early and late stub axles (short and long).

Please tell if this will work.

Following is the planned setup:

- 914/901 transaxle
- LSD from a 915 with six bolt output flanges
- 951 (1986) inner CV joint
- 914 axle (modified to fit 951 CV)
- 951 (1986) outer CV joint
- 951/944 stub axle ???? which ones????
- pre-74 911 stub axles

Thanks

Eddie 914

ps: the 3.2 should be ready soon and I need to get all the other stuff finished soon! Any one up for and install party?

Thanks in advance

i don't know the exact year, but you'll be able to tell when you see them, the wrong ones look really wrong ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
you want the stubs from the "long" axle.

944 stub axle:

and don't forget the spacer that goes on the 944 stub axle to hold the wheel bearing in place ...

83-85 use one stub 85.5 on use another. 951 first produced in 86 which would mean the later style stubs are what you want. CV stayed the same for the later models but I can't swear the stub didn't change again in 87. (front suspension was modified slightly in 87 making 85.5-86 cars oddball in the front) Turbos use a different CV and axle but the stubs I "think" are the same as the n/a

early CV's have the same number of INTERNAL splines as a 914 axle has OUTER splines (33)....
late (post 86.5)944 CV's have 27 splines (not what you want...)

You've got PRE 85.5 CV's and post 85.5 stubs?? Also, why not use the 944 hub?

Gotcha, I missed one of your posts there (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif) I've got an 86 parts car I'm using the rear arms from on a Manx and was going to use the axles and hubs on my 914, but if'n the splines is diif, I might hafta find some early CV's. I just tossed 3 sets of 924 suspensions last year (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif)

the hard part is finding the COARSE splined 915 trans output shafts with the right 6 bolt pattern.....

This is getting really confusing, especially parts being referred to as 951, when only 1987 and newer 944's use axle parts that start with 951. Before that they use 477 numbers, right? Somebody please clear this up. I am about to sell my 914/6 stub axles so I can upgrade to this larger CV setup. My understanding is that all the early pre-87 axles and CV's are the same, even on the 924, which only uses a drum instead of a hub. P/N 477.501.103 for the shaft, 477.501.263 for the stub, and 477.501.065 for the hub. This is 924, turbo, and 944. Auto trans is different. I'm assuming that 477 being a VW starting number, that these are the cv's that fit on the 914 shafts, not the 951, strictly porsche ones, PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.

I wish I had a pic to show,

But Aaron's correct in the layout.

I went to a junkyard last fall, and grabbed the cv/axle setup outa a mid 80's 944,and it pieced it together on my car.It all went together fine, and has about 1/2-3/4" of shaft travel.

The car I pirated the parts from was definately not a 951 turbo.

what is meant by "914 modified axle"? who/where in ca can this be done?

is a "pre '74 911 hub" the same as 914-6?

where do you get the "custom spacer to repace 944 dust seal"?

modified axle: take a little nub off the 914 axle... lathe operation. local machine shop.

pre 1974 hub: i believe a six hub is the same. 69-73 were all same IIRC

custom spacer: you make it, or have machine shop make it...

i have yet to finish my swap...
