Received the April 2006 issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotic today. On page 54, their is a mention in the international news...

"Rumors are swirling that Porsche is preparing a low-cost, stripped out raodster, based upon the existing Boxster platform and priced to compete with the Mazda MX-5, Pontiac Solstice/Saturn SKY and upcoming Vauxhall GT."

The notes go on to suggest the recent stock purschase at VW would ensure a concentration on VW mechanicals, including the 2.0L 4 cyl. Turbo used in the new Golf GTI. HP is expected at +200HP.

Yet another thing to love about the 914, no matter what they say they will never ruin it by making a "new" one that would be bigger, much heavier, and totaly without character.

Yes, the Boxster is how they tried to remake the 550 Spyder (and failed).

If they really wanted to re-release the 914... complete carbon-fibre chassis, flat-6 or their turbocharged V8 from the Cayenne... Oh, Carerra GT?

VW makes awesome diesels. I've seen people tune the newer (PD) TDI motors with minimal efforts and get great results..... stock TDI motor is about 90 hp and 150 ft-lbs. with minor upgrades, injectors, updraged ecu, ect. (~$1000) you will boost the output to ~150 hp and ~300 ft-lb! And still get the 41-50 mpg. I've even seen one person upgrade further.... turbo, internals, ect. and get 250-300 hp and over 400 ft-lb, and again still getting 40-50 mpg. To me thats just incredible....

throw out all the power windows, power seats, power top. Get rid of all the airbags and while your in there chuck the AC compressor.

A boxster "lightweight" wouldl be a very interesting car.... I think it would ROAST the 911, without even bumping displacement..

Only with such a "stripper" model would it make sense to put a VW power plant in .. however, I understand Porsche has made enough money with the Cayenne, and will do so well with the Cayman that they really have NO financial incentive to do a 'downmarket' car....

Shoemaker stick to your last................
