Getting ready to paint my 914-6. going to do the front and rear trunk and the door jambs and i'm pretty sure I'll mess up my driver's side door vin sticker. I have heard there is a way to get a correct identical replacement sticker with my month, year and complete vin but I have no idea how to get it. Can someone help?

Thanks. Jimmy

I don't know the way..
but I'll give you a bump.

what I remember about the previous discussion on this was that it came from the dealers and was a factory replacement...

however I also remember that the replacement did not match the original. Was not in the right color and may not of even had the vin # punched into it.

someone will correct me If I'm remembering wrong...

why not mask off and save the original?
I did

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/clap56.gif) Yeah, that would be ideal. I'm just afraid that I would scratch it up. I'll sure try that. Your door jambs and paint look great. Since I know very little about paintwork, what paper did you use to prepare the doorjambs and is that enamel or base clear?

the right answer is no, you can't legally get a correct replacement VIN sticker.

you can get some reproduction that will look right. there are, as you can imagine, various potential legal issues stemming from a nontraceable (i.e. not from the manufacturer) VIN plate.

you can get *A* VIN plate from PCNA - the importer and US distributor. however - it will be a current-style VIN plate with bar codes and such.

I was one of the people looking into the replacement sticker along with Mike *, my understanding was that it was ordered through a Porsche dealer back east that a member here worked at. When *'s ordered his, they did ask for proof of ownership. When the new sticker arrived, it did not look like the original, however, it did have his correct info on it along with a bar code that is now being used. So, no, it does not look like the one that came orginally with our cars. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

I took my sticker off in preparation for paint.

Jimmy,

I did all my own body work, priming, blocking, sanding, masking, etc...

the jambs were sanded with around 180-220 and then after priming they were finished with I believe 320

I didn't want to scratch the sticker either, so masked it first and then was just dang careful...

I went with single stage poly

I've painted cars myself before once or twice and swore I'd never shoot top coat again because my skill suck... so I contracted with a local shop to shoot the top coat.

(however... never say never, because I'm doing another 914 right now that I'm shooting myself against my better judgement)

There is a tiny bit more paint detail in my vintage race car thread which serves as my blog... The link is in the bottom of all my posts.

Thanks Brant
I do not want to try to paint,I can wrench OK but I believe I would hose the whole car with my rookie paint work.I have had many 914,s over the years but have never done one up like this one.I will put up some pics when I get to a point that I have something to show.

Also thanks to everbody else,I believe the thing to do is just tape it off and try not to screw it up.

Jimmy,

I don't blame you.
painting is just too much work.
I get frustrated with it too.

I once heard a real painter say that most novices don't have the "work ethic and dedication, that it takes to paint"

in a way it was a put down..
but in a way he was accurate.
I respect people like rick and other painters on this board that have the skill and knowledge to do it right.
I consider my self only a painting hack really....

just mask it and be careful.
tell you paint shop how irreplaceable it is and that they need to be careful too... you'll be fine.

Jeff, Thanks for posting your picture, I decided not to get one after it was discussed earlier. I keep hoping someone will come up with one closer to the original, like it really matters with the subie conversion that i'm doing. JK (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

I posted one a while ago. I will have to find them. I think they were only $5.00 each.
