I've got a 2.0L with hydraulic valves in my son's '75 bus. When I had the engine rebuilt a couple of years ago the shop told me that the procedure was to tighten the adjuster screws until there was no gap, then tighten 1-1/2 turns more and lock it down. They made a big deal out of saying it needed to be 1-1/2, not 2 turns. I've not touched his valves since I set them up.

One, change the oil and filter. Use synthetic 20-w50 and a GOOD filter. Run for awhile if you have stuck clanking lifter to disolve deposits.

Two, Loosen the valve screws to touching or a slight gap and tighten.

Three, put on valve covers and run the engine for 5 minutes or so to fully pump up the lifters. The gap allows partially compressed lifters to fully pump up.

Four, remove valve covers and readjust valve screws in to just contact valves, and 2 additional HALF turns in to partially compress lifters. Retighten nuts, put on valve covers and drive.

The manual is wrong at 2 full turns. Most of the top guys do the 2 half turns. Use this on my Vanagon hydros.

Thanks Ken,

Do I adjust the valves in the same sequence as if there were solid lifters? Why do you refer to 2 half turns as apposed to one full turn?

Ever try to make one complete turn with your hand? Severe tendon damage is sure to follow.

Don't even think about a full 1.5 turns! Yikes!!!
