Watch out for rabid racoons.
Wear gloves at all times.

Rent a have aheart trap..they work the best.
You could also put a one way door on the opening in the roof that they have made. Basically its a cone shaped item made from rabbit hutch 1/4 in wire mesh.

Its shaped like a cone with the small part farthest away from the house.

They can climb out, but not back in.

If and when you trap them in the have a heart trap, in my state it is illegal to transport them...so I just fill a trash can with watre and dunk the whole trap in the water...

Then you get to dig a hole.

The local animal control should be able to supply traps and/or even set them up for you...not sure how they would respond if you tell 'em you're hunting for dinner or a new coon hat though (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/chowtime.gif)

A couple years ago a big coon came in our side yard and tried to talk our Akita out of his dinner...the coon lost

I had that a few years back

1) farm and fleet has repelant - read the label, the one for Rabbits, etc worked. Spray attic

2) set traps by garbage cans - peanut butter as bait - they love it and cannot steal easy.

3) take far far away or drownd them (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ar15.gif)

4) put heavy wire over hole once you patch it. go way past where they got in first time.

I took like 6 - mother and mess of younger ones good 30 mile into country - they will piss and grap so cover them with something you can throw away

good luck

When I was growin' up in the mountains, we always just used a length of pcv pipe with an endcap set in the graound at a 30deg angle. Baited with tuna. The varmit would go in and slide to the bottom. And then wouldn't have enough traction to get back out.

I've cought three at a time this way. All in one pipe. Then You cap the pipe. Pull it out of the ground. And pump it full of car exhaust or water. Whatever's handy to kill them quickly and painlessly.

Best of luck.

get a live trap, use sardines for bait in the back of the trap... use gloves to handle when the coon is caught...

I had a problem with skunks - used a company called "Critter Control"; they may be in your area. Also caught possoms and raccoons beside the skunks, and I'm in the "city". Counties have different ways of controlling critters depending on the species and how many are out and about, some require euthanasia, some require release. You should call the county to see what their rules are. (BTW, skunks like marshmallow topped with peanut butter and dog kibbles) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Use the humane trap--- then hit in the head with a shovel.

A flat shovel works best.

I'm a tree-hugger animal lover but I shoot coons, too. Not much else you can do with them when they're destroying your house. relocation just makes 'em somebody else's problem. I live in the country and get tired of surburbanites relocating their problem animals to my front yard.

id say .17HMR
the round was designed for varmint hunting

if you just wanna get em fast id use .22 snake shot
itll do minimal damage if any to your house and its alot harder to miss

if you wanna go all the way a 4-10 shot gun w/ large bird shot thatll take a coon for sure(it would be really funny too)

.22 is the most pratical

.17HMR is most effective

Takes a few rounds, tho...not exactly humane. Sometimes after we trap them we shoot them in the cage and they just look back at you with those cute little eyes. So we let them go and they waddle off into the woods to die.

Set some bait. Peanut butter works great. While they're eating, sneek up behind, grab it by the tail, swing it around your head a few times and throw it as far as you can. They'll never come back.

You guys are too much. Swing it around your head. It may never come back But I'll never see my hand either. I'm curently running lights in the attic (couldn't get a strobe) and blasting a raido up there. Banging on the ceiling and waiting for them to wake up and leave. Tomorow I'll patch the roof. We couldn't get a trap for anything larget than a small cat. Frickin city shops. Stupid city animal controll are no help either.
Thanks for the sugestions. I like the pipe one. I'll do that this week to get rid of them permantly. I'll trap them and drop them on the animal controll doorstep. No I don't know how they got out. What do you mean they ate your roof. Oh I sorry Thats not my department (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/finger.gif)

I must admit this has been the funniest thread I have read in a long time. Thank you guys. It numbs the pain. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/av-943.gif)

Hav-a-hart trap and a .22 LR. You tap the barrel on the trap and they look right into it. One shot, one kill. Little Friskies work good for bait. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ar15.gif)
