Sandy and I have been talking about buying a piece of property, small house, or a small commercial building off the beaten path along route 66 or something. Were sick of snow and cold weather and long winters.
On my return trip from WCC "05" I found a couple of cool little out of the way places in NM. There were several small houses and commercial buildings sittng empty, and for sale. I did a search and found some of the property listings. Prices were very low. But, I'm looking for some input on this. We don't really care where we winter, as long as it's not too cold. We'll never be able to afford Cali. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wub.gif) or the big cities in AZ, LV, NM, So were looking for a rural depressed area. I thought if I had a commercial building I'd start a hobby shop again. We only need to be 8-12 hours or so from the action. (ocean, sking, racing, ect.) Anyone know anything about property values in Mexico? Can you safely purchase property, or does the government own it all? What about taxes? Tell me about where you all live. Who's in eden? BTW: Winter sux, But here's a cool photo anyway. Picture of our lake place. This is our bunk houe. I built it. Attached image(s) |

That's my fear. We may be shopping too late. Once Cali money gets there prices will rocket. I've heard it's nice there. Were at the tail end of the boomers. (48 yrs old) Were not ready to retire but were don't want to wait too long to get a winter place, or we feel we'll be out of the market. |

just fly to Trinidad. The TT dollar is six to one US Dollar and TT prices were dirt cheap on ordinary stuff. Beaches are killer, temps are in the 80's plus the boat to Tobago is only $50 to the worlds best beaches. The Bake and Shark sandwhiches are a real treat. Come this way...
4 distinct seasons.... Not too extreme in winter or summer and we normally only get one snow per winter.. No dumb rules, very few smartass people, prices are good and no one messes with ya.... And you can have as much junk in the yard as you want... Let your dog run free and not have to worry if you forget to lock your doors one night... You can leave the key in the ignition of your 914 and it'll still be there 3 months later... |

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) I was gonna make that suggestion. Its one of the last towns in North AZ that hasn't been invaded. However winters are on the cold side. It is at elevation. You would probably think it was spring compared to MN. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) |

Before you completely rule out CA, here's 20 wooded acres 125k. Nice area, 2.5 hours to SF or LA.

If you're just looking for a place to get away during the winters Lake Isabella is pretty nice. Only gets a dusting of snow maybe once a year and doesn't get screaming hot in the summer.
Lots of twisty roads as well. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif) |

I really liked Kingman, Az. when I went through it durring the Rt. 66 run. I would move there.
It's a nice forestry area yet only 22 miles from Laughlin! Small town atmosphere. Low traffic!!!!!! Sorry Rick, I live far from any type of eden. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif) |

I live 15 minutes outside of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. This used to be a quite little place until the California money arrived. Prices and taxes are skyrocketing thanks to them. My house has gone up $100K in 4 yrs. I was planning on retiring here but I to am going to have to go West where the land is cheaper.

Before you say "No way" to California as a whole, try looking well inland. Places like Redding (which is a furnance in the summer, with 110-115 temps, but very mild in the winter) are vastly cheaper than the areas along the coast, where most of the population lives. The NE corner of CA is pretty close to empty, and as long as you pick a plot that's not too high up (under 1500ft), you'll never see snow, except on the horizon.
Places like Barstow are also quite cheap, rural, and have very mild winter weather, yet LA is still close enough you could drive in once or twice a month to get those things civilization is good for. In between, the strip along the E side of the Central Valley, in the Sierras, has plenty of rural, cheap places that are still convenient to big cities. The really desirable places, like Santa Barbara, are hugely expensive, but paradise *should* cost extra. Other places are out of control just because the local economy is hot (SF Bay Area). |
