(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) Came back from east bay breakfast,parked the car in street .came back out later and nothing, not even a turn .Battery great, fuses good under dash, changed starterfrom doner car.I give up.Is it a fuse, a relay,I just dont get it.Any thoughts would be great.

you get 12V at the starter? tranny ground strap broken?

Dead battery? Battery hooked up?

Try the screwdriver across the solenoid terminals trick?

Have a voltmeter? There's not much there to go wrong. +12 on the big-assed wire, +12 on the yellow wire with the key in the start position. If you get +12 on both, the solenoid is kaput.

Did you take battery leads off and scrape/clean thoroughly and retighten. It's amazing how many times I've been foiled by dirty connections that don't even look dirty (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

I just rolled into garage and figured I'd get to it this weekend.So I looked at fuses today ,all good then changed starter.two minutes later nothing so that eliminates that.I guess I'll whip out the voltmeter in the next couple of days and check starter when key turned to start if nothing, where to next.

I know you probably know better but make sure it is out of gear when doing the "big screw driver" thing. It does work pretty good though.

Your approach may vary.

Kinda like guessing a number between 1 and 100... If you wanna guess 1 and go through each number until you get it, then:
Battery connections? Ground strap? Seatbelt relay junk? Ignition switch? Solenoid? Starter? Etc. This methodical approach is ok. Good to know all of those things are in order anyway.

If you want to start at 50 and split the difference each guess to nail it as quick as possible... Begin with the screwdriver trick (if you are comfortable with it). Post results.

Honestly, do simple first. Check your tranny ground strap. Just there is not good enough. Make sure it has good conection.

What year area you working on? This will tell if you need to consider the seat belt BS.
Are you hearing the fuel pump? If it is not energizing then it may tell you if your system is getting any juice.

Lastly, I would suspect the ig switch.

The screwdriver trick will let you know many things, though.

yeah before you do *ANYTHING* tell us if the fuel pump turns on at all....

thats worlds less dangerous than the starter trick.

70-76 1.7 and 2.0 are D-Jetronic Fuel Injection (circular oil bath filter or large black airbox in middle)

74-75 1.8 is L-Jetronic (my favorite--square shaped airbox off to driver side of engine bay..)

let us know.

if it has carbs, uh...I dunno.

well I can get it turned over by jumping terminals on starter with key on .So,this means I have some kind of loose wire or relay problem between starter and ignition switch.By the way car is Buick V6 and is carburated .Not a hack job.Very clean on wiring.Must be relay on engine fuse box or on under dash fuse panel? Ingnition switch? any ideas?

Do you get power to the car when you switch to ON (not start)? If so, it's either the switch itself, or the big yellow wire, which goes from START in the switch to the solenoid. Usually, the switches are flaky before they fail completely.

If you don't get power to the car when you switch to ON, it may still be the switch, but it can also be the red wire from the battery to the switch, or from the battery to the function behind the fusebox.

These circuits typically aren't fused.

There's no relay involved, unless the PO added one, or you have a later seatbelt interlock still installed under the seat. What year is the chassis?
