I have a pretty stock 914 1.7 with steel wheels (4 1/2" I think) The tires on the car are still bias tires so they are VERY dry rotted. I think the existing tires are 165 R15 which almost nobody seems to make anymore. What is the widest tire you can put on a standard rim without it looking weird, rubbing or being unsafe?

I'm fine with a relatively stock look but a little wider never hurt either

Thanks

205/50 will fit, but 195/55 would be fine too....

Guys guys guys,
He said 4 1/2" rim. A 205 tire will fit on a 5 1/2" rim but it is even a little bit too wide for that. If you want to keep your 4 1/2 inch rims I would say run a 185-65-15. They are only rated for a minimum of a 5" rim but you're not going to find much under a 185 that will give you a decent tire selection. If you upgrade to 5 1/2" rims you can run the popular 205 size.

Tire Rack options in 185-65-15

Hope this helps,

Early 914's came stock with a 4.5" steel wheel. To the best of my knowledge (pleae correct me if I'm wrong) the only 5 1/2" wheel avalable for early 914's was an optional alloy. This obviously changed with the later 5 1/2" "star" style steel wheel. There are lots of 4 1/2" steel wheels for 914's around but hardly anybody runs them for obvious reasons.

205's fit a 5 1/2" rim just fine. In fact most tire manufacturers (Including Hoosier) include 5 1/5 in the "acceptable" range of width for a 205 tire. As far as looking "retarded"...a large majority of 914's run a 205 tire on a 5 1/2" rims and I can't think of any that fit that description (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/cool.gif)

I'm pretty sure they are 4 1/2" but I have not taken them off to measure. At least one of the tires has not "traditional size" list on it but claims to be for a 4-1/2"X15" wheel. Near as I can tell (from receipts) the last time this car had new tires was 1978

Yep I bought it from Automobile Atlanta And I spent WAY too much. The hell hole is bad but the rest of the car is in surprisingly good shape.

On that deal I really felt screwed but recently I have liked them more and you can't beat a 20 minute drive to buy that part you need right now (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

i spaced on the 4.5 wheel thing.....

bulging sidewalls werent my thing. just a matter of opinion... 195's are great on a 5.5, 205's are most optimized on a 7" but are 'ok' on a 6 inch...

just opinions (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

I'm in Snellville, think there are 6 or 8 owners in the area. We should get together sometime.

yeah that would be fun. I need to get the car running well first so it makes a good showing. I'm trying to get it at least presentable so I can put it in the Georgia Tech Autoshow

Well I've decided to get the 195/65 r15 (I do actually have a set of 5 1/2" wheels as it turns out) but thats not what I really wanted to talk about.

I removed all the wheels from the car and lined them up and noticed something interesting. Not a single one matchs(except size)

BFGoodrich Lifesaver GT4 165sr15
Bridgestone RD108 - steel 165sr15
Michelin XZX 165sr15
Falls Metric 165 sr15
Le Havre (made in israel) 155sr15 (spare - not even steel belted)

Isn't at least good practice to buy tires in pairs? Oh well hopefully tomorrow I will have at least four new ones. After that the only glaring problem with the car is hell hole rust. I guess that probably should have been first but I really just want to drive it once or twice again before I take it apart
