So I've got two sets of good headlight trim. One set is black. The other set is black too but it used to be white.
I'd 'love to get all that black paint off there so I can have some white ones (like the one's Lawrence is hoarding) for my GT project. Here's what I've tried: Goof-Off - Nope Std Paint Thinner - Nope WD-40 - Nope I'm afraid to go heavy on the solvents... what say yee?? |

Paint them white? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
My headlight trim is white. I didn't realize these were "special". |

try these on the BACK first
Acetone Brake cleaner Laquer thinner Most likely its painted with an enamel based rattle can paint. If so, it will come off pretty easy with the right solvent... Acetone and Brake Clean can melt plastic...but the old plastic is pretty tough and not as easy to melt as the newer blends. Laquer thinner is gonna do it, but go slow and be careful of the plastic.. Bead Blast 'em. Use fine grade glass bead. I have done this with plastics and it worked out OK. Gives a nice dull finish that with white plastic should look fine. Test on the housing's back side.

I think the white trim was used only on the early cars, but I'm not sure when the change was made, though. |

Thanks for all the answers...
I think white was 70 only but not sure... very hard to find and most people don't like the looks of it. James (or anyone else), if you wanna swap those ugly white trim rings on your car with a 'fine' pair of black rings, let me know... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) Heavy solvents (carb, lacquer, etc.) I've been reluctant to try. I'll try them on the back and post the results. I have 80 grit in the glass bead blaster and that's what I was thinking as well. I just didn't want to fuch them up. Maybe if I lower the pressure and try that it might do it. Film at 11:00 |

Brake fluid???
That seems to melt paint pretty well. I dont know how it would react to the plastic. |

I've got a broken one out at the yard I was gonna sand to see how that works. I would think sanding with finer & finer grain paper, then using plastic polish would do the job.

(currently busy with the Alta Vista translator program trying to decipher Martin's post. So far it seems to say "Who gives a shit about headlight shrouds? Take them off dumbass, like they did on the GT's) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/huh.gif)

NO drinky fo me.....check this killer 356. Not sure how I would remove that black paint. I think I would go brake fluid first. It MAY soften the plastic, or make it brittle. Try wiping it on the paint, but not soak it. It may break up the paint, and not harm the plastic.

I have a white set that aren't painted black sitting in a box. I think the GT's took them off cuz they weighed soo much.
try soaking them in orange cleaner as that seems to remove everything in a day or two. |
