Is it worth it to repair the wiring harness for my fuel injector system or to put in carbs?

Nobody else has bit on this yet, so I'll put in my $.02 worth....
If a built motor with hot cam, then go dual carbs and tune it. Otherwise FI is far superior in every way... starting, running quality, performance, mileage, etc., etc. Fix it right... repair the harness. But fill us in... what happened to it??? all the wires in the harness are brittle and the pair going into cylinder 4 broke and the rest of them are well on the way. replacement connectors are almost $20 at auto atlanta. Is there anywere that you can buy a whole new harness?

jeff bowlsby sells a brand new replacement harness. not cheap but still less than half of what a new set of carbs would cost you ... unless you brake the engine open and replace the stock FI Camshaft with one that is ground for carbs, you won't gain anything by switching to carbs. in fact, IMHO, you'll lose ... i just went through the same thing 4 weeks ago. the injection harness on my 1.7L was old and brittle and the motor ran like shit. i bought two used 1.7L harnesses (from EASY in emeryville) and spend a sunday afternoon making one good harness out of 3 crappy ones. so, if you have some basic mechanical skills and you're not afraid of wires and a voltmeter, this can be easily done. cost me about $30 in parts ... the 1.7L purrs like a kitten now ... Can you build your own harness with just some wire and the right connectors or will that be to difficult?

can "you" or can "I" build the new harness?? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif) Depends on your skill level and whether you are willing to learn.... yes, anything can be done, it's not that difficult since you already have an original to go by.....the main thing is paying attention to detail and not scrimp or be too cheap with the replacement parts. use the proper connectors and crimper and correct type of wire... |

Finding the right connectors can be difficult; getting good crimps can be difficult; getting the rubber boots to go on all of the connections is difficult.
Jeff's harnesses are better than factory. http://members.rennlist.com/914_wiring_harnesses --DD |
