mine works, but it doesn't seem to line up all that well with the marks on the guage. Full tank is more like 3/4 tank.....is this common?

after replacing mine, it works fine, full tank is over the F mark, and the reserve comes on with like 50 miles left on the tank - don't ask how i know. It must be obvious.

about the same as yours. sometimes after a full (topped off fill up) it will only read 3/4, and sometimes it will read full. i worry about the other end of the gauge.

If I'm filling up and stop when the pump cuts off, the gauge reads a little above 3/4. If I literally top it off to where a little fuel splashes out, then it shows full. I've had my warning light come on once or twice, but that was during some hard cornering. I generally try not to let it run that low for everyday driving b/c I'm not exactly sure if it is reading correctly or not.

I don't seem to have any problems with mine.....

(of course mine is an oak stick with gallon lines burned on, that I dip into the tank when I want to know how much is left)

Mine sticks... but it's the gauge not the sender. I just tap on the glass and it moves to the correct reading. And I fill up as soon as the low fuel light comes on.

The one in my t4 seemed to be fairly accurate.

The one in my /6 has a problem of going from full to empty too fast. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/w00t.gif)

I flew a Piper Cub one time. The gas gauge is a L shaped piece of wire attached to a cork. The tank is between the pilot and the engine, so you can see the wire out of the windshield. When the horizontal part of the wire touches the top of the tube, you land.

After pulling mine apart and fixing a sticky float it works great. When the light goes on you better be pulling over for gas soon.

Just wish the gauge would move slower, you know like get better gas milage (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

I replaced the sender and I get an accurate reading now.

Before, the gauge would read 3/4 when full.

it's usually not the gauge, it's the sending unit. they get all gunked up after 30+ years ...

you can try to clean the unit, if that fails, get a new one ...

Mine works great - full shows full and empty is about 3 gallons less than empty.
Car stops and gets pushed at 1/4 tank. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif)

With a working sender, I find that the light starts to blink on in right turns when you have as much as 5 gallons left in the tank (or nearly 1/3 of a tank). The light will come on over bumps while moving straight when you're down to 3 gallons. With the light on solid while going straight, you have about 1.5 gallons left, or 30-50 miles of driving left.

You have to get to under a gallon to get fuel starvation even in moderately hard right handers. A really long at-the-limit right might starve you a tad when you're that low. The light will have been on solid for quite some time.

This car works fine, had a Super Beetle that was Karmann, gas guage never worked. Would never get below a quarter tank, which was fine until the odometer stopped working (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif)
