I need to replace the welded trunk hinges on the car, and can't decide which one to go with, the one from restoration which works just like the original one, or the other model from J West: http://www.jwesteng.com/pivot.htm Seems like the J-west one might allow for an easier lid alignment, but it's also 3x the cost. Anyone installed this product? |

I looked at both, decided to go with the JWest version, I was very impressed with his product.

buy the hinges from j-west and don't look back. they are a perfect solution for the busted welded hinge.
and while you are there, get a rennshift, a fuse block replacement and whatever else strikes your fancy. you will not be dissapointed. PS: i have the rennshift, hinge kit, fuse block and maybe even some other items and am very happy. cheers, scott |

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) no, the original metal in the area looked a little rough, so I welded up the holes, ground it down and drilled new mounting holes and sandwiched that area with the new plates. I looks nice and strong. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

I'd probably weld either product in, just to be on the safe side, in addition to the bolts on the J West model. The JW model looks like it might be easier to get the trunk lid aligned properly, once the plate is in the correct place, that is. |

I put a set of the JWest hinges on Mike Cooley's car before we took it to him.
Very easy to install, and a far better design than the factory part. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) Unfortunatley, the hinges can't be used with a six. The mount points will interfere with the oil tank. And my wife won't let me put a set on her car. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) I talked with James about the problem with a six oil tank. He said he is working on resolving it. I would recommend them to anyone thinking about installing them. |

Ok smartass........ I already thought of that. I figure that when one of mine break, I will buy a set and weld them in. Until then, I will use the addage "It ain't broke, so I ain't going to fix it." |

Actually it is not 3x the cost, it is less than twice, as you get both sides with my kit (and the originals will both fail eventually). Just wanted to make sure you knew that you get both sides. Also, the major advantages are the ease of installation and the durability (they won't fail). |

How do you install them? I haven't really looked at the stock setup on my car, just the ugly reweld someone did in the wrong spot. Now the alignment is all boogered up. Is there a template or are there existing mount holes from the stock unit that you go by? I'll be buying a set as soon as I can get my car legal. If they're in the right place to begin with, you don't HAVE to align the hinges. I've been welding in the stockers for 30 years and only once have I had a fitment problem. Best one I've used was a repro that had the lower sice finished out like the sides, so there was a lot more support to weld. The Cap'n |

Mine aren't in the right place, that's part of the issue.
My question as well. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) |

My repairs are not concourse quality. I do things right and make them strong, but don't care about making it look exactly like it was new. Ok, disclaimer aside...
No big deal, you can do this and it can be simple. When I bought my car, the passenger side hinge mount was rusted and broken, and the trunk lid was cockeyed. The fix was easy. I just cut out the rot, replaced a tiny bit of sheet metal, reformed the sheet metal a bit on the hinge part to make good contact with the wall where it would be welded, lined up the trunk lid perfectly, then welded it up. Strong as new. Cleaned and painted with Hammerite. Will never have an unsealed battery around that part of the car again. Done deal. You don't need a template. If the trunk lid is closed and aligned correctly... check gap carefully all the way around, get it positioned perfectly, tack the hinge bracket, double check.... weld her up. |

It would seem that the trunk lid can't be closed without the hinge moving out of position.
Did you align yours without the springs in(torsion rods, or whatever) and then put them in after you welded the hinge brackets back in? |

Sorry I didn't mention that I had removed the torsion springs. Minor detail. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif)
I had the whole lid off while bracing the shock tower / frame rail area. When I put the lid back on I could rotate the hinge bracket to the right place. I tacked it, opened the lid to make sure it went through the range of motion and stayed in line, closed it up, double checked alignment, and welded it up. |

The JWest kit comes with instructions, and they are not difficult to install. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

I think you can see that the orginal design was not adequate if they were failing after cars were 6 years old. |
