There were some pics posted in another thread of a 914 in Germany, I think, that had a Boxster muffler. I liked it! Has anyone here done that or know anything about the installation?

That muffler weighs like 60 lbs. I HATE the stock boxster muffler.
Cargraphic makes a muffler that weighs a LOT less that has the same look. |

You can go with an aftermarket that weighs a lot less. They are pretty cool and not very restrictive. But expect to pay watercooled prices. |

Uh, 986 mufflers do not weigh 60 pounds, and I have a hard time believing the aftermarket muffler claims that say they'll trim 28 pounds off the car... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)
I was hoping they were right (28 pounds sounded like a GREAT savings), but I found an extra Boxster muffler for $30 last week and snagged it to fiddle with for our 986. It's a very, VERY nice piece of stainless-steel goodness, and picking it up, I'd guesstimate it at about 30-40 pounds -- maximum. Interestingly, the guy who was selling it wanted to put it on a 356 Outlaw project (a great idea) and I started wondering if it might fit on the 914... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif) And, obviously, it does. But the approach angles from the headers are hardly idea compared to the straight-back 914 setup... thoughts? The one I pulled off a 99 986 was really heavy. 60 lbs was an estimate, but I think its pretty close.

Stock Boxster muffler is a boat anchor....much heavier than a stock 914 set up.
I replaced my Boxsters stock muffler with a polished SS Dansk sport muffler 3 years ago. The Dansk weighs like 1/2 as much as the stocker. If I were going to try a Boxster muffler...gut it first to lighten and open up the sound. Stock Boxster muffler is very well muffled....as in too much. I was going to say chucking stock muffler on the Boxster was one of the best ways to get rid of weight. Putting one on a 914 should be a crime. |

Apart from the location/look of the exhaust tip, is there something about these mufflers that is special ? Just from looking at it, it looks like the gasses enter from the outer ends and join in the middle. Yeah ? Do they have a noticeably different sound ?

Steve de Jung and I were looking over the stock muffler in his shop before we started (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/welder.gif) Both of us agreed it is a VERY nice piece -- much, much nicer than the quality of any of the aftermarket mufflers -- with the possible exception of the $22,500 muffler category... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) The stock muffler will probably outlast the 986. I'd be curious to know how much a Dansk weighs... Also, the factory mufflers are well known for losing no power, and probably have exactly the right back pressure for torque in particular places. I've been looking into doing a muffler bypass mod on the stock muffler like this: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...st=&#entry38824 But I am now having second thoughts about if there will be a negative affect on torque due to a reduction in back pressure. I guess the only way to find out is to build it and dyno it. Maybe a pair of shut-off valves are the way to go? Or active flaps? What a hassle that would be...
