It appears my throttle cable stuck and my car revved to the max on my tach - only for a moment before I shut the car down. It did this twice, but I was able to carefully drive the car home and it seemed to run OK. Even started back up several times on my way home, but will not start now? Did I do permanent damage? Any way to tell - drain oil and see what metal comes out? Any chance it is something simple like need to change the plugs? HELP?

Drain that oil, magnet in hand.
Possible you floated the valves and had some interference. Check the basics... Fuel, spark, no air leaks. Injected or carbureted? |

It turns over like it is going to start, but never does? Almost sounds like it is not getting any gas and/or spark - hope this helps? It has the stock L-jet on a '73 1.7.

yep, check the basics - fuel, spark and compression.
did you have any kind of rev limiter in place? if you suspect that the overrev has damaged the engine, try the compression check. if your compression is fine, you are a good way towards being out of those woods! |

we posted at the same time.
if you don't have a compression tester handy, try quick checks to see if you are getting fuel and spark. pull a plug, ground it to the engine and see if you are getting spark. then pull an injector, stick it in a bottle and crank to see if you are getting fuel. you'll know a lot more after that 15 minutes of tests. |

one other easy test - try using some starter fluid to start it. shoot some into the intake per the instructions on the can, while someone is trying to start the car.
If it starts and runs for even a very short while (couple seconds), you know for sure you have a fuel problem. |

After checking for spark....and you have spark....
Give it a shot of ether/quick start while cranking the starter.....if it starts you have a fuel problem....fuel pressure too low.... If no start, probably low compression due to valve train issues. Check compression and see if the valves are adjusted out of spec. |

OK - I figured out it is fuel related? When I give it a shot of starter fluid it rund for 10 sec or so then dies? I also checked the fuel pump and it is working - what else could it be?

I had a simular problem... bad cpu, but I understand that's unusual that they go bad. Regarding your throttle cable, if they are installed wrong, they can wrap around the clutch cable and get stuck like that.

Been a while since I've had D-Jet, but from my recollection, the next thing I'd do is pull out the electrical connections from the injectors, use a standard 12v test light, and see if they are getting any power when the car is cranked.

As embarassed as I am, the car was out of gas - sorry? The fact that I drove it into the garage I could not beleive that was it? I just installed a new gas gauge and it needs calibrated. Thanks for your help!
