hi nord, i've been lazy. i have a mystery engine ready to install. if the dyno sheet on it is correct, it should be fairly peppy. meeting with a physical therapist at 7:30am and my doc at 9 to review the lastest set of xrays. a deteriorating rotator cuff matter has gotten to the point where i can't nurse it any longer. bad, real bad. riding in a car, setting at the computer, i couldn't endure the drive to federal way without the benefit of vicodan. i hope to be setting an appointment for the surgery soon. dealing Group Heath is a real hassle. being house bound sucks.

That bites Kevin. Sounds like the kind of pain that's just always there. Hope they can fix it for you.

Fun time for all. Well except for Mark, who had to use a AAA flatbed to get home. Better luck next next time; look forward to meeting you.

Garrett was obviously enjoying the visit. He was diagnosed with MS in the early 90's and is confined to his bed and a wheelchair. MS is a disease that ravages the body but leaves the mind sharp and clear. It has definitely left his sense of humor intact. He has a long history with Porsches, having owned a large number of 356s and even done some concours judging in that arena. He is devoted to 914s and has recently acquired a survivor '74 2.0 even though he can't drive it.

The car is remarkable: original Olympic Blue paint with a deep rich shine and no breaks in the finish; fully loaded with f & r sways, chrome bumpers, OG tool kit, dealer license plate frame, etc. The car is tucked away in a small garage, so it wasn't possible to take the photos the car deserves.

Note the original license plate frame. The Santa Clara, CA dealership is now known as Sunset Creek Porsche.

Body is impressively straight with only a few door dings, etc. Dan noticed that the trunk lid was amazingly flat.

Always nice to see 4 lug Fuchs with their factory finish.

I agree with Dan that we need to organize a working BBQ to help sort out some driveability and storage related issues so that Garrett can ride in it. He's got a great yard to park a bunch of teeners and I'm sure he would really enjoy the group.

Update on the Tail Shif Trans probelm. Cone got pulled and lots of things point to a blown transmission. What is the cost for a rebuild? Not a happy guy at this point.

$75 gets the 1970 tail shift transmission out of my storage lean-to. I drove the car and know that it worked through R-1-2-3. Car had no plates and bad brakes, so didn't go any faster or further than around the block a few times... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I live in the boonies, so the block is kinda long...

If you can get a working tranny for $75 and get your 914 back on the road, I say do it.

I will take it. Send me a PM with your location. You close to the Roy "Y"? Are you pretty confident that it will shift into 4 and 5? Appreciate the offer. MRF

Yes, I am close to the Roy Y. 20 minutes maybe. But then you would miss out on the huge pile of other stuff you may need...

I have no idea if it will shift into 4 and 5. Money back guarantee that it is a transmission, suspected of working. Not trying to rip off anybody here. Just trying to get some VW junk out of my yard.

Nope. My cars are both 4 cylinder, and not 2.0. They are VW, and I am an air cooled VW freak.

Need to find a way to put a VW logo on the hood... just to get under the skin of all the driving glove and Porsche leatherette jacket wearing pricks. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Used to tell the joke about the porcupine and the Corvette owner, and everybody else used to give me crap about the joke working for Porsche drivers also. Didn't think that was true until I joined the club and interacted with some of the members (and I do mean members) who take themselves too serious.

What is the difference between a Corvette and a porcupine?

I should have seen that one.

I actually agree with the VW more than Porsche. Not often, but once in a while someone will come up and ask what the 914 is. VW is my answer. If they keep staring at it, then I offer up "It's a type 47". They usually nod like 'oh yeah, makes sense' and walk away. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif)

I actually dislike the PORSCHE lettering on the engine lid as well as the hood crest. They will both get removed, someday. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

If the tranny shifts fine into R, 1st & 2nd, there's probably no problem with it at all. In fact, I don't recall anyone at Dr. Evil's tranny clinic having any issues with their 3rd-5th gears (sliders bands or syncros). In fact the 3rd -5th sliders, syncros and syncro bands were scavenged from folks spare trannys to fix all the 1st & 2nd problems. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)
