Lets start a list of correct 914 Tool Kit parts.

the 4cyl. kit , did it come with a shaft to use with the plug socket or are you intened to use the screwdriver shaft?

That's not a plug socket. That is the lug wrench,and the bar at the top fits through the hole in it.

Here's somthing to think about when at a swap meet. Look for trade material pieces (see pics) to help our 914-brothers out.

Next time in the office supply cabinet look for BLACK rubber bands that are about 4" long 5mm thick & about 1/8" thick. Thats usually a hard item to find in a tool kit.

Tod,

You mean that thin U-shaped wire with hooks on each end (picture #1)??

It's to pull off hub caps. On plain wheels with hub caps each hub cap has (2) little holes on the outside diameter of the hub cap. The U-clip wire is inserted into the holes, then pulled to remove the hub caps.

Tom the 74 kit did not have the bag with the tie, only the thin black plastic polyethylene bag.

I find it odd but my 74 car has that hubcap puller tool too, but in 74 none of the 914s came with hubcaps, they were either alloys or the cross-style steel rims.

Yeah, I'd say the black plastic bag for 1974 and the leatherette bag for 1973. Very early ones got the coarse weave bag. You didn't get the plastic and the leatherette bags together in one kit.

Kool a 914 site for GeeKs like me...Horray!!
70-71-72-Very early 73's had that vinyl tie bag..
(I think there was smooth grey and a black pattern)
And production date 12/73 or so had the vinyl
'Flip Bag'...(that not much would fit into)...
Earlier tie bag kits had the pliers also included
with them..
Seems the spark plug wrench and small bar for your 73
and later kit is missing.....
The six kits appears to be on the money....
About 6 years ago from A Porsche dealership,
I bought a '914 kit' that was a Supercede #,
and it was 416.00$ And was in between a 6cyl
and 4 cyl kit for items enclosed..Sorry no pics at this time...

Why was a rubber band even included in the kit? From looking at the pictures, it seems more like a MacGyver kit to get the car home. "If we wrap the rubber band around the screw driver, and hook up the paper clip to the battery, we can jump across the leads to . . . " But seriously, why a rubber band?

The rubber band was used around the entire outside of the black plastic bag to keep the tools from falling out.

Remember the black plastic bag was for the 1974 model year.

I've got the plastic bag for my '75.

Tom, what is the make up of the "6" tool kit showing the spare fuses? It looks like a vacuum pack kit in the picture. The ones I've see were loose in a small clear plastic bag. Can you confirm?

My '72 tool kit, hermetically sealed - so no photo, contains:
Towing eye
Combination screwdriver
Hub cap removal tool
8x13 mm open end wrench
Socket for wheel bolts
Socket for plugs
Bar for wheel bolt socket
Bar for spark plug socket
Vinyl, strap-tie bag

My bag is light brown & the only one I've seen in that color - all the others have been gray. Just proves my belief that when a parts bin was empty, they grabbed whatever was handy. The kit is as-delivered & I am the original owner.

Don,
Thats my tool kit (6) and yes they are vacuum pack fuses only because thats what I had to put in it and make it complete. I have'nt seen a factoy kit so I did my best from pics! Close to factory as to take 2nd at parade 2005.
